The Desler assassination[5] was an attempt at the life of Eternal Supreme Leader Abelt Desler orchestrated by Imperial Marshall Herm Zoellik of the Greater Garmillan Empire's Central Army. It was carried out as part of the Imperial Marshall's plot to sieze control of the Greater Garmillan Empire and restore the old aristocracy.
Prelude[]
Imperial Marshall Zoellik had command of a large faction within the empire's military
Following the end of a Civil War Over the Rights of Succession of the Garmillas Grand Duchy, Abelt Desler declared the Greater Garmillan Empire, with himself as Eternal Supreme Leader, and abolished the aristocracy.[6][7] The former aristocrats maintained high positions of power within the empire's armed forces and opposed the Supreme Leader and his policies, particularly his push for integration between pure-blooded Garmillas and other conquered races.[7]
The most influential among these aristocrats was Herm Zoellik, the Inspector General of the Central Army. His power extended much further than his branch within the Imperial Defense Force, making him the second most important figure within Garmillas. Arrogant and ambitious, Zoellik plotted against Desler to seize his throne and restore the long-abolished aristocracy.[6]
The Assassination[]
Desler's body double and Deusura I's captain moments before their death
On April 19 of 2199,[1] the Eternal Supreme Leader was to embark on a journey toward the Balun Military Base to conduct a secret inspection. The only people aware of this should have been the base's commander, Col. General Erich Domel, and the Supreme Commander of the Astro Fleet, Admiral Ditz.[2] Zoellik planned to sabotage the engine of Desler's flagship, Deusura, to blow up the ship en route and avoid being identified as the culprit. However, his plans were discovered by Secretary of Propaganda and Information Miezela Celestella, who had control of Garmillas's secret service. Desler thus avoided the trip, instead replacing himself with a body double.[4]
Deusura exploded while approaching the subspace gate linking Balun with the Large Magellanic Cloud.[2]
Aftermath[]

Admiral Ditz in prison
Following the event, Desler hid himself aboard the dimensional submarine UX-01 and put on a low profile for the following weeks. He let Zoellik act freely, not revealing his survival to anyone in the empire outside of Celestella and Imperial Guard Director General Hydom Gimleh, who continued to surveil the Imperial Marshall's movements in secret.[4] Since knowledge of the inspection was supposed to only have been shared with Domel and Ditz, Zoellik managed to put the blame of the whole affairs on the two, his most powerful enemies within the armed forces, who were arrested, with Domel even being sentenced to death.[2][3]
Circa 10,000 ships gathered at Balun at Zoellik's command
The central government kept quiet about the Leader's death, and Zoellik planned to reveal this truth to a large fleet he was gathering at planet Balun to rally them against the capital to establish himself as the new head of state of Garmillas.[4]
