A sailor never abandons another sailor!

—Daisuke Shima[12]

Daisuke Shima (島 大介, Shima Daisuke) is an Earthling officer in the Earth Federation Air Force and a former member of the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy. He initially served in the Cosmo Navy during the Great Garmillas War, participating in Operation M and boarding the space battleship Yamato as its Chief Navigator.

He played a significant role in ending the conflict with Garmillas. After a short period in the Cosmo Force's Transport Fleet, he rejoined the crew of the Yamato during the Gatlantis Campaign. Following the conclusion of the war, he was promoted to Executive Officer under his best friend, Captain Susumu Kodai. Shima participated in the Iscandar Incident, and after the reorganization of the 65th Escort Corps, he was assigned to the Air Force to lead its new Limited Autonomous Air Defense System.

Biography[]

Early life and service[]

Daisuke Shima was born in Naha, Japan on Earth on August 15, 2178,[1] to Daigo and Saori Shima. For generations, his family had produced sailors, and his father, Captain Daigo Shima, commanded the UNCN space cruiser Murasame. As a child, Shima aspired to attend the Space Merchant Marine School and follow the Inner Planets Route, inspired by his family's spacefaring tradition and his esteemed father.[9] He never felt lonely when his father left for a long stint in the fleet, as Daigo always told him stories of his journeys in space when he returned home.[13] He once told him that a true sailor never abandoned a comrade in need.[12]

However, his father became less willing to tell him his tales after the onset of the Inner Planetary Wars, though he started doing it again after the conflict ended and after his younger brother Jiro's birth in 2190.[14] The only time Daigo ever mentioned the conflicts to Shima was when he told him of the time he had rescued an escape pod from a refugee ship which was holding a baby. He also urged his son to never abandon an escape pod.[13]

Daigo Shima reassures a young Daisuke before leaving for the First Contact with Garmillas

In 2191, before departing with a UNCF task force to establish first contact with ships from the Greater Garmillan Empire, Shima spoke with his father, who reassuringly predicted a peaceful encounter with the aliens. However, his fears were realized when the meeting escalated into a battle that claimed his father's life and destroyed most of the participating UNCN ships. The United Nations publicly declared that the alien vessels had initiated the attack.[15]

Following his father's death and the outbreak of the Great Garmillas War, Shima abandoned his aspirations of becoming a merchant sailor and joined the United Nations Cosmo Navy to follow in his father's footsteps. He entered the Space Officer Training Academy on April 1, 2194,[1] and studied under Admiral Ryu Hijikata alongside Hajime Hirata and his best friend, Susumu Kodai.[3]

He graduated from the academy on March 31, 2198, and on the next day, he enlisted in the UNCN as an Ensign, assigned to the 101st Airborne Corps' Aerospace Operations Department.[2] On April 4, he was stationed at the third pier of the Far East Central Spaceport, and on April 21, he became a navigator aboard the cruiser Tsurugi. Following his participation in a repair mission for the orbital monitoring satellite 18 on August 14, he was promoted to navigation officer on September 7.[1]

Operation M and boarding Yamato[]

Shima Arcadia 2199

Shima on Mars in early 2199.

With the war against the Garmillas Empire becoming increasingly desperate and Earth dying from constant bombardment, Shima was assigned to Project Izumo, a plan to evacuate a handful of survivors and re-start Earthling civilization on another world. Unknown to him, Izumo was about to change.[3][11] Shima and Kodai were selected to take part in Operation M as a recovery team sent to randevouz with a spacecraft code-named Amaterasu. For the mission, Shima was transferred as a special operation personnel to the space battleship Kirishima on November 10, and he left the Earth with Kodai on December 25.[1][3]

The two arrived on Mars the following day, and began waiting in a small base set up in the ruins of Arcadia Port under the code-name Uzume. On January 17, 2199, just as he was wondering aloud if Operation M had been successfull, Shima recieved a call from the Cosmo Force HQ for the Far East, ordering them to depart to intercept Amaterasu. He threw the impatient Kodai his helmet, and took the backseat in their Type 100 recon plane. They were able to spot Amaterasu as it burned through the Martian atmosphere, but they managed to track down the escape pod containing its pilot. As they made reached the pod, Shima asked Kodai about the craft's pilot, but she had already passed away. He noticed the pilot was a woman, and identified the device she was carrying as the one they had been sent to retrieve. They took the object, and erected a makeshift grave to the "messenger from a distant star".[3]

Kodai Yuki Shima

Shima is surprised by Mori's similarity with the crashlanded pilot

Shima and Kodai were picked up by the Kirishima three weeks later and met with Hirata to give him the device. Hirata regretfully informed Kodai that his brother had died in battle off of Pluto. The Kirishima arrived back on Earth on February 8.[1] While walking down the hallways of the Far East HQ, Kodai and Shima encountered a pair of workers from headquarters, Yasuo Nanbu and Yuki Mori, discussing a rumor about the Earth fleet being used as a decoy in the previous operation. Kodai angrily asked Nanbu if the rumor was true, but stopped as soon as Mori intervened. Shima commented on the similarities between the woman and the messenger on Mars, but Kodai downplayed it and left to meet Admiral Okita, the fleet's commander, at the Central Hospital. Despite Shima's complaints about being ordered to remain on standby, Kodai barged into the hospital room where Okita was being examined. Shima stayed out of the room and face-palmed when he heard Kodai being reprimanded by Admiral Hijikata. He turned somber, however, when Okita apologized to Kodai for having led his brother to his death.[3]

As they were leaving, Kodai was asked what they would do next, and he simply replied that they would remain on standby. They were stopped from leaving by Dr. Sakezo Sado, who sternly reminded them that they were not the only ones who had lost relatives in the war. To lighten the mood, Shima commented on the unexpected presence of Hijikata, and Sado mentioned that he had been friends with Okita since their training days, much like Shima and Kodai. Shima laughed and embarrassedly told the doctor that they were not on the same level as the two Admirals and left with Kodai.[3]

Kodai Shima watch Yamato wreck

Kodai and Shima fall in front of the Yamato's wreck

Kodai and Shima were then instructed to standby at the Homeland Air Defense Corps base, where they inspected a new fighter plane model. Shima suggested that it may have been a prototype for air defense, but the plane's pilot, identified by Kodai as the UNCF's top ace, Saburo Kato, interrupted him and stated that it was meant to be a new carrier-based fighter. At that moment, an alarm sounded at the approach of enemy planes and a carrier. Eager for a chance to avenge his brother's death, Kodai encouraged Shima to help him commandeer the fighter and they flew off to intercept the intruder near the Japanese island of Kyushu. However, the fighter was not armed and soon encountered engine failure, crashing near a sunken World War II-era wreckage. Kodai wondered if the enemy had come to scout the wreck, but Shima dismissed his theory.[3]

They soon spotted the enemy planes closing in and rushed to take cover as they began bombing the wreck. Surprisingly, the vessel's guns activated and shot down a Garmillan carrier. Shima noticed the UNCF Air Defense Corps engaging the alien planes, but much to his annoyance, the planes completely ignored their signals for help.[11]

Shima and Kodai Program Yamato announcement

They were eventually rescued, but Kato punched them both in the face for the trouble they had caused. Back at Central Hospital, Dr. Sado checked them out, and Shima noticed the ace pilot angrily staring at them from the other side of the room and informed Kodai. The next day, they were called in to listen to an announcement by Admiral Okita and the Far-East District's leadership. Shima spotted Kato, still staring at them, among the crowd gathering in front of headquarters. Okita announced that Project Izumo had been scrapped in favor of a more daring plan, Program Yamato, which aimed at retrieving a device that could heal Earth's biosphere. The device, the Cosmo Reverse System, had been offered to the Earth by the people of planet Iscandar, in the Large Magellanic Cloud, with the plans to build a Wave-motion Engine that would allow an Earthling vessel to travel at faster-than-light speeds and reach Iscandar. Shima looked in awe at a video message recorded by the Iscandarian Queen Stasha, which was contained in the capsule they had retrieved from Mars. In the video, Stasha stated she had sent her sister, Yurisha Iscandar, to the Earth, and he spotted the schematics of Amaterasu. Mori proceeded to announce the selected senior officers for the program. Shima looked happily at Kodai when he was nominated as the Tactics Officer. He suddenly turned serious when he was nominated as the Navigation Officer and tasked with the helm of the Yamato, the space battleship chosen to undergo the mission to Iscandar.[11]

Jiro gives Shima a good luck charm

Jiro gives his brother their mother's good luck charm

The next day, Shima was officially transferred to the Yamato Program and received a special wartime promotion to Lieutenant.[1] He was preparing to board an armored vehicle headed to Yamato's launch site. While standing in line, Jiro stopped him to give him a good luck charm from their mother, which she had never gotten around to giving to their father. Shima acknowledged their mother's concerns and told Jiro that he would certainly come back and take care of her until he did.[11]

Shima changed into his uniform and took his position on Yamato's first bridge. He tried to introduce himself to Mori, but she directed him to the captain's cabin, leaving him confused. Meanwhile, Kodai returned to the bridge looking perturbed, but despite Shima's concerns, he didn't share what had happened. The ship's Executive Officer, Lt. Commander Shiro Sanada, arrived on the bridge with the rest of the officers. Suddenly, the alarm blared, and Shima took his position. Headquarters informed Yamato that a Garmillan missile was heading for its position, and Shima wondered if the battleship could take off in time. The ship's autonomous sub-computer, Analyzer, informed him that they still did not have the necessary power to do so. However, the entire United Nations began diverting power toward the Yamato, allowing it to activate the Wave-motion Engine.[11]

Kodai Shima Handshake

At Okita's command, Shima launched the Yamato, and Kodai took down the enemy missile with its main guns. As the battleship flew through the atmosphere, Okita congratulated Kodai, and Shima shook his hand while smiling.[11] Kodai then looked at the planet they were leaving and wondered if they could truly save the Earth. Shima sarcastically asked him if he was getting cold feet.[16]

Warp test near Jupiter[]

For this topic in more detail, see Destruction of the Jupiter Floating Continent

Okita convened a briefing for Yamato's upcoming warp test in the ship's central operation room. He and Sanada explained the warping process and emphasized the need for extreme precision. Noticing Shima's uneasiness, Kodai returned his previous quip about getting cold feet. He continued to listen closely as Information Officer Kaoru Niimi described the Wave-motion Gun, a powerful weapon created by diverging the Wave-motion Engine's output.[16]

Shima during the first warp test

Shima during the first warp test in Earthling history

After Yamato passed Mars, Shima took the helm for the warp test. Despite inputting the space-time coordinates correctly, the ship warped out near Jupiter and became trapped in its gravitational field. Kodai and Okita asked for an explanation, and Shima explained that he had no idea what had happened as he struggled to steer Yamato away from Jupiter. Sanada informed the captain that an unknown object had just been detected on their path, causing the ship to warp out to avoid it. As he tried to divert power to the auxiliary engine to get more thrust, Kodai apprehensively asked Shima to take care of the situation, much to his annoyance. Despite his best efforts, the battleship fell onto Jupiter. A floating continent was spotted within the planet's atmosphere, and Okita ordered him to land there.[16]

During their stay on the continent, a small Garmillas fleet attacked Yamato. Shima reminded Kodai that with the main engine still offline, they couldn't charge Yamato's guns to fire at the enemy. As soon as the engine returned online, Okita ordered the battleship to take off. As the Admiral wanted to test the Wave-motion Gun on the floating continent's base, Shima passed control of the ship to Kodai. Unexpectedly, firing the weapon destroyed the entire continent.[16]

The solar system and beyond[]

Shima Kodai argue

Shima and Kodai argue over the possibility of sending a rescue mission to Enceladus

The day after the battle, Shima and the other officers discussed Yamato's route. Okita asked what he thought about the possibility of making a detour to attack the Garmillas base on Pluto, and he explained that the fastest route to get Yamato out of the solar system did not include such a possibility. Kodai vehemently opposed him on this front, wanting to get revenge on the Garmillans. When the ship received an SOS signal coming from the Saturnian moon Enceladus, Kodai argued they shouldn't waste time there, despite Shima rebutting that a sailor should always help another sailor in need, as his father had once told him. He turned to Okita and stated that they had to go, even if the chance of rescuing anyone was minimal. The Admiral's choice was made for him when Yamato encountered a problem with its engine, which needed a rare material found on Enceladus to be repaired.[12]

Later, Kodai asked Shima to sit beside him in the mess hall. He tried to explain that he wasn't necessarily against the rescue mission. Shima understood that Kodai simply wanted to get revenge for his brother's death. Shima told Kodai that he could relate, as he had been inspired by his father's words and was now acting upon them, wanting to follow in his footsteps. Kodai offered a fist bump, and the two made up. Kodai led a medical team with Mori to the site of the SOS mission, and after their return, Mori asked Shima where he had gone. Shima explained he was debriefing the captain, and asked if she had to go too.[12]

Shima Okita pre Operation M2

Shima meets with Okita and tells him about his father

Later, while on the bridge, he criticized his Weathering Officer Kenjiro Ota for making an inappropriate comment about Mori's replacement. Shima then asked Nanbu how it felt to sit at Kodai's post, to which he embarrassedly replied that it was fine. Later, he participated in a meeting led by Captain Okita, during which the Admiral announced his intention to carry out Operation M2 to destroy the Pluto base. After the meeting, he went to Okita's cabin and congratulated Kodai on finally having the chance to avenge his brother. On the way, he met with the captain and informed him that they were waiting for him at the CIC to begin the mission. He also explained that he had lost his father near Pluto, so he wholeheartedly supported Okita's plan to attack the enemy there, and swore he'd make up for any lost time.[17]

Shima Operation M2

Shima participated in the operation from the CIC. When Yamato was hit by an enemy beam weapon, he attempted to move the battleship to its blind spot as per Okita's orders. However, the Garmillans managed to hit them again. The ship sustained too much damage for him to control, so Okita instructed him to crash-land it in Pluto's oceans. After another hit, the battleship feigned sinking and concealed itself under the water's surface. Niimi later informed the crew that an analysis had revealed the presence of many reflective satellites scattered throughout Pluto's orbit, and Shima realized that this was how the enemy was able to hit them regardless of their position. Eventually, Yamato resurfaced and destroyed the enemy base. When Kodai returned to the bridge after leading the fighter squadron, he congratulated him.[17]

The equator festival[]

Shima Harada equator festival

Shima smiles as Harada angrily looks for Ota

After Operation M2, Chief Executive Heikuro Todo of Program Yamato Headquarters contacted Yamato to congratulate them. Shima watched his message on the bridge's main video panel. Later, Captain Okita informed the bridge crew that they would be allowed to make one last call to Earth before leaving the solar system, which pleasantly surprised him. Sanada also announced that they would hold a festival to celebrate the milestone. At the party, Shima and the pilot Shinohara talked with the flustered nurse Makoto Harada, who had been convinced by Ota to dress up in costume as a maid. Shima was also surprised to see Kato arrive in traditional monk attire.[10]

He then got in line to wait for his turn to talk to his family on Earth. Chief Engineer Hikozaemon Tokugawa asked Shima about his family and recalled that his father had died during the first encounter with the Garmillans. When Shima's turn came, he found Jiro playing and asked for their mother. Jiro told him that she had gone to the hospital to visit their aunt. Saddened, Shima told him he didn't have much time and that it could be the last time they got to talk to each other.[10]

As his call time ran out, Shima asked Jiro to tell their mother that he would see his mission through, and to take care of her. Just as the call reached its final seconds, Shima's mother arrived home. Shima desperately begged for more time, but Saori only came into view as time ran out, giving him only a moment to see her. As the Yamato passed the heliopause, Shima sat alone on the bridge, observing his mother's good luck charm.[10]

Beyond the solar system[]

Shima Gliese 581

Shima steers Yamato during the Breakthrough of the Garmillas Encirclement

On March 5,[18] as Yamato traversed the sirius system, Okita made the bridge crew, including Shima, look at Earth one last time using the ship's VLBI telescope. Shima then warped the ship to the Gliese 581 system, where it became trapped in an artificial plasma corridor by the Garmillas forces. At the captain's orders, he moved the ship into a breach in the corridor, despite it leading straight into the furnace of the red dwarf Gliese 581. Shima navigated the battleship through the star's flares, when a massive flare to large to go around appeared in front of them, Okita ordered Shima to continue ahead, and ordered to fire the Wave-motion Gun to tear a hole through it.[19]

Days later, he attended a meeting with Sanada, Niimi, Kodai and the captain, where the two technology department officers explained their progress on the analysis of three captured Garmillan automatas. He asked if they had managed to gain any information such as the enemy position, but Sanada answered negatively. However, he stated they would attempt to get one of the robots to tell them. Shima was on the bridge when said android broke out of the analysis room and went rougue, and he watched as it met Analyzer outside of the ship and ceased to function.[20]

Merda Ditz and the truth about the war[]

Shima reacts to Merda Ditz's appearance

On March 23,[18] Yamato remained stranded in a dimensional fault. The ship encountered the remains of multiple starships that had become lost in the same space, and Shima likened the dimension to a ship graveyard. They were contacted by an active Garmillan ship, claiming to know how to escape the fault. A representative from the Garmillans, Lieutenant Merda Ditz, was sent to the ship. Shima observed her from the bridge as she landed in Yamato's third hangar, and was surprised to see she looked exactly like a female Earthling, but with blue skin. She proposed a plan for Yamato to use its Wave-motion Gun to create a path to regular space, with their battle carrier towing Yamato out afterward. During her meeting with Kodai, she also stated that the Earthlings had been the ones to initiate the war, which greatly angered Shima, who was listening to their conversation from the bridge.[21]

Shima during the meeting in the dimensional fault

Shima expresses his skepticism regarding Ditz's plan to escape the dimensional fault

Shima was skeptical that the aliens would uphold their promise and opposed the plan, but Captain Okita decided to trust the Garmillans. and Yamato successfully opened a hole between the dimensions with the Wave-motion Gun. However, the Garmillan cruiser cut its tow beams as the transfer was in progress, abandoning Yamato and prompting Shima to bitterly state that was what they gained by trusting the aliens. To his surprise, the tow beam was reactivated and they successfully exited the dimensional fault. A brief skirmish ensued with the Garmillas main fleet in the area, resulting in Ditz's battlecruiser being sunk in friendly fire, leaving her stranded aboard Yamato. As the battleship passed near their benefactors's wreck, Shima was the only member of the bridge crew who refused to salute their benefactors as they passed by their wreck.[21]

Okita shima video room

Shima bows to Okita before leaving the room

Shima attended a meeting with high-ranking officers to discuss what to do with Ditz. He later went to the Yamato's video room, where he watched a propaganda documentary about the Earthlings' first contact with the Garmillas. Okita sat silently behind him. When a picture of his father's funerary memorial came up, Shima commented that the Garmillans had attacked him and his crew first, showing no hesitation to destroy mankind. He stated that they were demons hiding behind human faces and, for him and Kodai, unforgivable enemies. Okita told him that his father had been a great man, and Shima thanked him with a bow before leaving the room.[15]

Shima argues with Yamazaki

Shima angrily refuses to accept Yamazaki's words

One of his subordinates, Tadashi Obama, asked him if planet Balun had been christened by Program Yamato HQ, but Shima told him the name was included in Yurisha's plans. Suddenly, Emergency Chief Susumu Yamazaki, Tokugawa's right-hand man, came into the room and asked to talk privately to Shima. He revealed that he had served on Shima's father's ship during their first encounter, and that Shima's father had been ordered by Central Headquarters to attack the Garmillan fleet first, despite his reluctance to do so. Shocked, Shima refused to believe this, accusing Yamazaki of tarnishing his father's reputation with lies, and stormed out of the room in anger.[15]

During a later meeting, Sanada informed the main staff that a nearby planetary system likely housed a Garmillan base. Shima mentioned that he had already planned a route to avoid it, but Captain Okita insisted on taking that route and decided to release Ditz near the system. Shima strongly opposed this idea, expressing concerns about Ditz potentially being a spy and stating that she had already spread false rumors aboard the ship. Kodai tried to calm him down, but he argued that since Kodai had lost his brother in the war, he surely did not trust Ditz. Kodai stood in silence for a second, prompting Shima to ask him surprisedly if that wasn't the case. Before they could continue the discussion, they were notified that Ditz and a pilot in a Cosmo Falcon fighter had launched from the hangars, interrupting their conversation.[15]

Shima talks with Tokugawa

Eventually, despite Shima's chagrin, Ditz was released as Okita had decided.[15] However, his troubles with Ditz's claims did not stop after she left the ship. At a later meeting, where he was explaining Yamato's next warp would put it outside of the Milky Way Galaxy, he and Kodai ended up arguing about this matter, prompting Okita to relieve them of their duties and sentence them to cleaning duties. As they cleaned out the Wave-motion Gun's muzzle, Kodai tried to have a conversation with him, but Shima coldly dismissed him, and moved on to clean other sections of the ship. While Shima cleaned the engine room, Tokugawa talked to him about his family. He mentioned how his younger son wanted to become a sailor like him and also talked about his granddaughter, Aiko, and how he wanted to find her a good husband. Shima replied that finding someone who met Tokugawa's standards would be difficult. The Chief Engineer then jokingly asked Shima to marry his granddaughter and even showed him a photo of her. Shima realized Aiko was still a toddler, and that the older officer was teasing him. They both laughed about it. Turning serious, Tokugawa told him that sometimes, people had different views on facts, but that the only reality was that the war had started. Even so, he told him they both still had family and should consider themselves blessed. This deeply resonated with Shima.[22]

Yamamoto and Shima talk

Yamamoto and Shima discuss their feelings toward Garmillas

In the hallways, he encountered the pilot Akira Yamamoto, who had been the one to release Ditz from the brig for an aerial duel. He noticed that she had been let go after her insubordination, and when she inquired about why he was carrying a mop, he jokingly replied that he had done the same thing she had. He expressed his understanding of her desire for vengeance and her feelings, but she pointed out that her enemy had saved her. He attempted to argue that she had remained true to her feelings, but she countered that, although Kodai had been overly idealistic in dealing with Ditz, she now understood him better. Shima recalled his father's words about not wanting to engage in conflict with the aliens and asked Yamamoto if she still harbored any animosity towards the Garmillas, which she denied. She got up to take her elevator and informed Shima that Kodai had been concerned for him. He said he would speak with him and thanked her for the conversation.[22]

Shima got up, and went to the bridge to reconcile with Kodai.[22]

Battles on the edge of the Milky Way[]

Suddenly, Yamato was ambushed while passing through a proto-star system. The bridge staff, including Shima, moved to the CIC, and Yamato hid behind a large rocky body to seek cover from the enemy. Captain Okita fell unconcious in the middle of the battle, and needed to undergo surgery. After the operation successfully ended, Tokugawa suggested sending someone to greet him, and Shima gave Kodai a thumbs up, telling him to leave the bridge to them.[23]

Shima during the psychic attack

Shima during the Psychic Attack on Yamato

Days later, Kodai and Mori boarded a Type 100 plane and performed a reconnaissance mission around the ship. During their flight, they began arguing, not realizing that their conversation was being broadcasted directly to the first bridge, which amused Shima and Tetsuya Kitano. Suddenly, the ship was subjected to a psychic attack. A bright light shone through the bridge windows, capturing the attention of Shima and everyone else. Subsequently, all the crew members fell under the control of the attacker and entered a trance, heading towards the engine room. They began to dream, reminiscing about pleasant memories from their past. Shima dreamed of his mother and Jiro.[24]

The Project Izumo Faction and Carell 163[]

In the following days, Yamato faced a series of offensive recon missions from the enemies. This, combined with the breakdown of the O.M.C.S., started to take a toll on the crew's mental health. To alleviate the stress and restock the ship's dwindling supplies, Niimi proposed a detour to the nearby Earth-like planet Beemela 4. Kodai asked Shima if this would affect the schedule, and Shima, despite knowing they were already behind plans, assured him they would be fine.[25]

Niimi shima 2

Niimi recruits Shima into the Project Izumo conspiracy

After the meeting, Shima reviewed the planned route alone in the navigation department room. Someone approached and handed him a cup of coffee, and he initially thought it was his subordinate Shigeru Hayashi. However, he soon realized it was Niimi. She inquired about the schedule, and Shima lied, telling her they were on track. Niimi, in a seductive manner, confronted him and told him he was a terrible liar. She emphasized the importance of their voyage resting on him and recruited him into a conspiracy to end Yamato's mission to Iscandar and restore Project Izumo, which was planned for Beemela 4. Shima left the room shaken and encountered Warrant Officer Toru Hoshina, Head of Security Itou's second in command. Hoshina revealed himself as a spy who had infiltrated the ranks of the Project Izumo Faction and asked Shima for help to stop their mutiny.[25]

Shima steers Carell 163

Shima was in control of the ship when the Yamato was unexpectedly attacked by two Garmillan warships. Sanada instructed him to engage warp, but he warned him that the nearby neutron star, Carell 163, would affect their course. Despite the XO's order to adjust and proceed with the warp, Carell 163 did indeed alter their trajectory, causing the ship to warp out near the neutron star where it was attacked by a large Garmillan fleet. Shima remained at the helm throughout the entire confrontation, and the Yamato barely survived the encounter.[25]

Mutiny on Beemela 4[]

Shima talks to Hoshina

Shima talks to Hoshina

While Yamato headed towards Beemela 4, Shima talked with Hoshina while observing the ship being repaired. He asked Hoshina if he was sure about trusting him. As the battleship neared the planet, Niimi placed a folded piece of paper on Shima's station. He read it in silence and quickly hid it when Sanada approached to instruct him to land. Shortly after, he met with Niimi and she informed him that the security department members who were part of the conspiracy had captured Sanda, which surprised him. She assured him that it wasn't her intention, and then placed her hand on his chest, telling him it was too late to back down and that he had to choose which side to stand on.[7]

With the captain incapacitated due to another health issue, the mutiny launched in full force. The security department seized control of the main bridge, and Niimi announced that Shima would serve as the new interim captain. Shima addressed the crew over the intercom, explaining that he, along with Sanada, had decided to abandon Program Yamato and restart Project Izumo in order to relocate as many people as possible to Beemela 4. He also informed the crew that they would head back to Earth once the resupply team came on board, a decision made in agreement with Admiral Okita. Shima asked the crew to follow the security department's instructions to avoid confusion.[7]

Shima turns on Itou

Shima confronts Itou.

At Shima's request, Tokugawa and Yamazaki were confined to the engine room because of their influence over the younger crew members. Itou praised Shima for his insight and then showed the bridge crew an Iscandarian device he had found in Mori's quarters, accusing her of being an alien and claiming that she was actually Yurisha Iscandar using a false identity. The Head of Security then pressured Shima to launch the ship, even though the landing team was still on the surface.[7]

He pretended to start the takeoff but refused to leave the survey team behind. Itou then threatened him with a gun, but Niimi intervened and saved Shima. Shima then aimed his weapon at Itou, but before they could fire, Hoshina showed up and shot Itou, disarming him. Okita, who had been freed by Hoshina, arrived at the bridge and restored order, and Shima gave the young Warrant Officer a thumbs up.[7]

Later, Hoshina and Shima reported to Okita's cabin. Shima refused to take credit for stopping the mutiny, feeling partly responsible for the situation because they were behind schedule. To his surprise, Sanada informed him that Kodai had found data on Beemela's surface that would help them make up for the lost time.[7]

Breaking through Balun[]

Shima Yamato route subspace gate

Shima explains Yamato's route after discovering the subspace gate

Another meeting was held in the navigation department room, and Shima briefed the main staff on their current situation: Yamato was thirty-five days behind schedule, but Kodai had found data indicating the existence of a subspace gate that could jump them 30,000 light years to planet Balun. Yamato arrived at the gate, and Shima, Nanbu, and Kitano observed it from the bridge.[26]

Sanada led an exploratory mission to activate the subspace gate's control satellite, taking Kodai and Mori along. The bridge crew discussed Mori's involvement and rumors about her supposed Iscandarian origins. Shima urged them to stay focused on the mission. Following the successful reactivation of the subspace gate, the rumors were proven false as it was revealed that the real Yurisha had possessed the body of a young Warrant Officer.[26] The crew discussed this development and the fact that Balun was under Garmillan control, which made Shima unsure of their next steps.[27]

Shinohara went on a recon mission to Balun and barely made it back to Yamato with his fighter damaged. The main staff immediately gathered for a meeting, and Shima inquired about his condition, which a nurse confirmed to be stable. Shinohara had gathered information on a massive Garmillan fleet gathered around Balun, which surprised Shima and everyone else. Despite the danger, Okita chose to go through the gate and use the element of surprise to escape through another subspace gate linked to the Large Magellanic Cloud. Shima took the lead for the subsequent operation, and Yamato successfully fled the planet and arrived at the satellite galaxy. After regaining conciousness, he looked in awe at the galaxy ahead of them.[27]

Shima talks with Niimi in the brig

After arriving in the Large Magellanic Cloud, Shima visited the brig where Niimi had been imprisoned following the mutiny. Through the door, she congratulated him, acknowledging that he had ultimately been right. Shima expressed that he wouldn't exactly describe it as being right, but stated that the important thing was that they had made it in the end. Later, he met with the rest of the main staff in the Central Operations Room, where he explained the dangers of the Rainbow Star Cluster, an area of space ahead of them. Passing through it would have been the fastest route to Iscandar, but the relativistic jets inside it would have made it difficult to traverse. He concurred with Kodai that navigating through it would be too challenging and informed the other officers that he had already charted a route around it. However, Okita chose to take the fastest route, not wanting to lose the advantage they had gained at Balun.[28]

As expected, Shima had trouble controlling the ship in the midst of the cluster. They had to rely on the radar's optic mode due to the area's interference, much to his dismay. After he mamaged to steer the ship into a calmer area of the cluster, they were suddenly ambushed by a Garmillas task force.[28] They were attacked by enemy planes that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. Shima wondered where they had come from, and Okita offered the difficult to believe theory that they had performed a warp. Yamato eventually came face to face with the enemy flagship, and Okita ordered Shima to take the battleship toward a nearby ion storm. Despite his initial reluctance, he obeyed, and the Garmillan dreadnought was pulled inside the ion storm instead of them.[29]

Shima and Kodai funeral

Shima and Kodai attend the funeral

Despite achieving victory, Yamato was heavily damaged in the encounter. A Garmillan boarding party had abducted Mori, which took an heavy toll on Kodai. At a funeral for those who had fallen during the battle, Shima noticed Kodai getting distracted by Yurisha, who had returned to her own body after the end of the battle. At a later meeting, a pardoned Niimi informed the rest of the officers that they had found a planet that could provide the materials needed for their repairs. Captain Okita suggested that Kodai lead an expedition to the planet's surface. Despite his hesitancy, Shima reassured him, stating that getting some fresh air would help him.[30]

Battle on Garmillas and stay on Iscandar[]

For this topic in more detail, see Battle of the Imperial Capital

While on the planet's surface, Kodai encountered a group of Garmillan dissidents. This group was fighting against their dictatorial government and included Merda Ditz and her father. He discovered that Iscandar and Garmillas were two double planets. The rebels also provided insight into the political situation of their empire. Additionally, they informed him that Mori had been mistakenly taken for Yurisha and was being transported to their Eternal Supreme Leader, Abelt Desler. While the main staff discussed this information in a meeting, Shima and Nanbu noticed Kodai's absent-mindedness.[31]

Shima later joined Kodai in Yamato's rear observation deck and wondered if Yamato's crew would have come to Iscandar if they had known it was so close to their enemies' home world. He believed they had only gotten that far because they did not know the truth. He tried to console Kodai by telling him that Ditz was sure Mori was still alive, but Kodai coldly replied that the Garmillans could have already discovered her true identity, which startled his friend.[31]

After one final warp, the Yamato finally arrived at the Salazar system, home to Garmillas and Iscandar. Shima noticed that the space around them was eerily calm, but then the battleship was suddenly attacked by a Garmillan wave-motion gun,[31] which they barely managed to avoid. Shima continued to pilot the ship during the subsequent battle, which ultimately led Yamato to the heart of Garmillas's imperial capital and to the apparent death of Supreme Leader Desler. Additionally, Kodai and Yurisha successfully rescued Mori.[32]

Shima guided the Yamato towards Iscandar. As they neared the planet, he expressed his amazement to Kodai that they had finally arrived, and Kodai agreed. Upon landing on Iscandar's sea, a group was sent to Queen Stasha's palace. When they returned, they informed the rest of the crew that the queen had refused to give them the Cosmo Reverse System, much to the surprise of Shima and Nanbu.[33]

Kodai and Shima on Iscandar

Later, as they stood alone on the bridge, Shima told Kodai that the entire crew was uneasy. He impersonated Admiral Okita, who was currently ill and bedridden, and said that Okita would have advised everyone to stay grounded. While the rest of the crew took some time to relax by Iscandar's sea, Shima and Kodai stood on the bridge watching the sunset over the ocean. Shima remarked on the beauty of the moment and stated that ships belonged in the sea.[33]

Eventually, Stasha agreed to give the Cosmo Reverse System to the Earthlings and also gave Kodai a holographic message recorded by his brother, who had been captured by the Garmillans and had crash-landed on Iscandar. Shima listened in silence as the message was broadcast to the rest of the ship. After fully receiving the Cosmo Reverse System, Sanada ordered him to take off the ship and head back towards Earth.[33]

Shima Yamamoto yuki

Shima takes a picture with Mori and Yamamoto

One month after taking off from Iscandar,[N 2] Shima encountered Yamamoto and Kodai sitting in Yamato's elevator hall. Noticing the girl's embarrassment at being found with Kodai, he toyed with them and took a picture with his camera. He then invited the two to take some photos together in the rear observation deck, where they met with Mori. Shima asked if she was waiting for someone, and it became apparent that she was supposed to have a date with Kodai. They took some pictures in turns, and Shima took one with Mori and Yamamoto before suggesting they take one together.[34]

The battleship was suddenly attacked by a Gatlantean fleet from the Gatlantis Empire. Shima, Kodai, and Mori quickly went to the bridge. When the enemy flagship contacted them, Shima mentioned that they were making first contact. Following Kodai's orders, he directed the ship toward the nearby free-floating planet Kappadokia and made an emergency warp to escape their pursuers. The warp took the ship to an enclosed void. Upon waking up, Shima advised Nanbu to stay calm. The battleship began moving on its own, and despite his efforts, Shima couldn't take control of the helm. Tokugawa reported that the engine was also unresponsive, and Shima wondered where they were headed. The ship stopped in front of a mysterious planet, and Kodai led a survey team to its surface. However, they soon lost communications, and a black cover surrounded the world's atmosphere. Shima, Ota, and Nanbu tried to analyze the planet, but with no success.[34]

Kodai eventually returned from the surface, just as the Gatlantean fleet closed in on the planet. He reassured the bridge crew that he knew how to win against them in battle. Soon, Yamato was flanked by a Garmillan fleet, ready to fight alongside them. Surprised, Shima realized why his friend was so confident about their chances against the Gatlanteans. During the battle, the planet started to transform, revealing its artificial nature and trapping a Garmillan carrier. Yamato broke away to rescue the carrier, but time was running out. To reach the trapped ship faster, Shima asked Yamazaki to push the engine to its limit.[34]

They ultimately managed to rescue the stuck ship and defeat the Gatlantean forces. With the battle won, Kodai and Shima fist-bumped, and Yamato returned to its planned route after waving goodbye to their newfound allies.[34]

Navigation continued regularly for another month. At some point during their return trip to Earth, Mori came to serve coffee to the Navigation Department staff. Shima took a sip of the bevarage, which much to his immediate surprise, had a terrible taste.[35]

On the bridge, Kodai wondered why Shima was leading the Yamato toward Balun. Mori guessed he wanted to try and use the subspace gate, which he confirmed, explaining to a confused Nanbu that while the one to the Large Magellanic Cloud had been destroyed, the gate toward the Milky Way was presumably still intact, and it was worth checking out. At the gate, a Garmillan fleet ambushed Yamato, and Sanada ordered Shima to head toward the gate as soon as possible. Inside the subspace corridors, a large Garmillas warship attached to the battleship. Kodai asked Shima what was going on, but he could only reply that the helm was unresponsive.[35]

The battleship was boarded, but they eventually managed to defeat the enemy. However, as the Yamato exited the subspace gate, Shima was horrified to hear an internal transmission of Kodai tending to a severely injured Mori.[35] The woman fell into a coma, and Shima and Nanbu stood alongside Kodai as he visited her in sick bay.[36]

Kodai invites Shima to Kato and Harada's wedding

Shima looks at his invitation to the wedding

He was on the bridge weeks later to hear the first video communication between Yamato and Program Yamato HQ in months. Later, Ota proudly declared he would steer Yamato until it reached Earth, and Shima playfully reminded him it was his turn at the helm. When he asked where Sanada was, he was informed that the Executive Officer was setting up the Cosmo Reverse. He noticed Kodai comforting another officer and saw through his calm facade, knowing full well his dismay over Mori's condition. As he sat at his post, Kodai approached him and handed him an invite to Kato's upcoming marriage to nurse Makoto Harada. He smiled and commented that it was finally happening, but worriedly looked over at Kodai as he left.[36]

He attended the wedding ceremony, and then went to the first bridge and took the helm as Yamato approached Earth. To everyone's surprise, Kodai brought a fully healed Mori onto the bridge. Shima commented that miracles do happen and stood up to earnestly welcome her back.[36]

Interwar period[]

With the Great Garmillas War over and the Earth successfully restored by the Cosmo Reverse System, the Earthlings undertook the path of reconstruction. The Earth Federation was funded and gained control of the United Nations Forces.[37][4] After Yamato's disarmament, Shima was transferred to the Transport Fleet.[4] While he had come to accept the truth behind the First Contact with Garmillas, he initially refused to reveal it to his family to protect his father's honor.

Yamato crew wave-motion gun fleet plan

The former bridge crew discusses Yamato's rearmament

In 2201,[38] the E.F. announced the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan and its intention to build new warships equipped with Wave-motion Guns. The Yamato crew, aided by Admiral Hijikata, vocally opposed the project as it went in contrast with a promise made by Okita to Queen Stasha that the Earth would never build such weapons again. Their opposition only served to isolate Hijikata from the upper echelons of the Cosmo Force, and the Admiral was sent away to take command of the remote Outer Defense Division. Shima was present when he wished them goodbye and asked them to stand their ground. He was also present when the former bridge crew discussed their next steps, and Sanada announced his intention to rearm the Yamato himself.[39]

Attending Daigo's memorial service[]

In 2202, Shima attended the Obon festival to pay his respects to his deceased father. During the festival, he chose to reveal the truth about his father's death to his mother Saori. He was unable to carry the secret any longer and felt it was the right time to share the truth. At the festival, he also met Bando, an old friend of his father, for the first time. Bando introduced himself as a former shipmate of Daigo during the Inner Planetary Wars. He apologized for not being present at Daigo's seventh death anniversary due to the ongoing Garmillas War and for not reaching out to Shima since the end of the conflict. Shima also mentioned to Bando the story his father had told him regarding the Inner Planetary Wars, and Daigo's friend revealed that he had also been there.[13]

At the memorial service, Shima saw the offerings brought by General Kotetsu Serizawa, who had issued the order to attack the Garmillan fleet, thus singlehandedly starting the conflict. Angered, he asked his mother if she thought Daigo would have survived had the war not started. Saori replied that while that might have been the case, Shima also wouldn't have gone to Iscandar, which had made interstellar collaboration possible and ultimately proven that Daigo's ideals were right.[13]

Terezart and the Gatlantis Campaign[]

Shima and Kodai meet again 2202

Shima and Kodai reunite at Hero's Hill

On December 2, 2202,[18] a telepathic message in the form of his deceased father urged Shima to board Yamato and fly to the planet Terezart. Six days later,[18] Shima joined his Yamato crewmates at Hero's Hill to honor the third anniversary of Admiral Okita's passing. There, he reunited with Kodai and shared that news of his recent exploits had reached even the Transport Fleet. Under Dr. Sado's command, the entire crew lined up in front of Okita's statue to salute their fallen commander and remained at the monument until late at night.[4] During the reunion, Shima learned that nearly everyone received a similar telepathic message and informed the crew of his vision, noting that Daigo, as in life, had been of few words. Ota commented that it seemed as if Yamato itself had become aware of the questionable path taken by the Earth Federation and was trying to call upon its crew. Shima pondered his words. Suddenly, the new E.F. Cosmo Fleet flagship, Andromeda, passed over them, and he looked at it in silence.[4]

He later announced to the crew that he had decided to leave the military, and Ota and the others tried to persuade him to stay. After staying at Hero's Hill, Shima went to an Izakaya with Ota and Hayashi, and the three continued to drink together. The next day, Jiro woke him up to find his face swollen. When his mother jokingly compared him to his late father, Shima annoyingly denied it before promptly apologizing. He informed his family that, since his last journey had been a long one, he had some leave time, and his mother asked him to use the time to consider an invite from Bando to join his company. Shima also informed his mother and brother of Kodai's recent engagement to Mori. After taking Jiro to school, Saori suggested to Shima that he could become a sailor in the private sector, to which he agreed.[13]

Kodai Shima 2202

Kodai and Shima look at Sanada's data

Some time later, Shima discussed the telepathic signal and its likely origin with Kodai and Sanada. He showed them images of a quasar heading towards Earth and told them the message had come from the same direction. Suddenly, Sanada's holographic display emitted a bright light and showed the vague image of a woman praying. Shocked, Kodai pointed to the hologram and almost fell before Shima caught him. Kodai was eager to leave, believing the woman was asking for help, but Shima remained skeptical. Kodai tried to use his father's words to persuade him to leave, but he responded that if the military had been considerate of their feelings, he wouldn't have chosen to resign. He also gave advice to Kodai, reminding him that he was not alone anymore and that he would have to consider Mori's opinion too, now that they were engaged.[4]

Days later, Shima went to meet Bando at Bōsō District's spaceport, where his civilian transport company was based. Arriving early, he started wandering around and noticed the Kirishima being dismissed. To his surprise, he was also approached by Hirata, who explained that he had been transferred there after finding discrepancies in the numbers regarding supply distribution from the Transport Fleet. He believed that resources had been diverted into the Andromeda's construction, which had to have started before the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan had even been announced. The two fell silent and watched the snow fall onto Kirishima. Hirata explained that his report regarding the disappearing supplies had fallen on deaf ears, greatly frustrating Shima. He also informed him that Kodai had gone to the Garmillas embassy on the Moon, much to his surprise.[13]

Shima went to meet Bando in his office. When he shook Bando's hand, he noticed that it had gone soft. Bando explained that handling trade with Garmillas was necessary for a civilian company but expressed fear of the Earth being economically swallowed by the much larger Garmillas Empire. He expressed that the journey Shima and Yamato had made to Iscandar would have been for nothing. Shima was surprised and explained that they hadn't traveled to Iscandar to fight the Garmillans. The two discussed Serizawa's order to attack Garmillas. Shima restrained himself from reacting as he had three years ago when Yamazaki first told him the truth. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the preemptive strike, despite it having been pressured by the Garmillan forces, and that his father had hoped for cooperation with the aliens. Bando then revealed the truth behind his and Daigo's rescue of the escape capsule during the Inner Planetary Wars, and that the pod's life support system had failed by the time they had taken it. He believed that it wasn't important to have hope but to react well to situations where reality betrays hope.[13]

Yamato crew revolt

Shima looks at his former crewmates as they plan a revolt

A few days later, Hirata informed Shima of Kodai's return from the Moon. Members of the embassy had revealed to him that their visions were coming from the goddess Teresa of Terezart. They also informed Kodai of the existance of a Time Fault underneath Earth's surface, a byproduct of the Cosmo Reverse's activation that had been used by the E.F. to rebuild its arsenal at a faster rate. Sanada shared this information with the rest of the crew, and some members gathered at Yamato's drydock. Tokugawa informed Kodai that they had all been reassigned to new posts, and Shima clarified that Kodai's recent complaints to General Commanding Director Todo were not the cause of this. Shima had been reassigned too, and was to leave for the Perseus Arm to join the local transport fleet.[13] Defying Earth's current policy, the crew decided to take off on their own towards Terezart, but Shima stayed out of it.[4]

He returned to his home, and informed his family of his transfer. As he was packing his belongings, Saori asked about Bando's offer, and Shima explained that the ship wouldn't leave for the Perseus Arm if he didn't board it, and that he would ask Bando for some time. To his surprise, his mother asked him if Kodai would come with him, and he replied sharply.[13]

Despite his hesitation, Shima kept track of the crew from a distance as they used the Kirishima to sneak aboard the Yamato and prepared to steal it. He was unable to move until all crew members had reached the underground dock holding the battleship. Then, he got into his car's driver seat and sat there aimlessly, without the lights or heater on. Suddenly, he received a call from Jiro, who told him that there was an urgent call for him from Bando. Jiro also mentioned that Shima had their mother's good luck charm, so he would be fine, but asked that he come back home soon as it was late at night. Confused, Shima checked his pockets and noticed that his mother had slipped the good luck charm to him. He was almost brought to tears by the realization that his mother had understood the entire situation. He also noticed that, during their phone call, Jiro had used a different pronoun to refer to himself, as if he was trying to show a more grown-up appearance.[N 3] Shima understood that their mother would be fine as long as Jiro was with her.[40]

Kodai Shima take off 2202

He was suddenly approached by an armed task force sent to stop the revolting Yamato, and they urged him to get out of the car. He lied, stating that he was there under orders from Serizawa to confront and persuade Susumu Kodai to stop the revolt.[40] He disguised himself as a member of the task force and entered Yamato through an open hatch. He promised Kodai, now the ship's acting captain, that he'd talk to him later, and he gladly gave him the helm as Yamato took to space once again.[40]

Shima was let privy to the fact that Mori had also boarded the Yamato, despite Kodai requesting she stay back on Earth.[41]

As the battleship picked up the fighter squadron, the Garmillas Lieutenant Klaus Keyman, attached to the embassy, requested to be allowed on board as an advisor. With a chuckle, Keyman asked Kodai to let him join, since they were already short-staffed. Suddenly, the ship was confronted by Andromeda, and Sanada asked Shima to take them inside the asteroid belt, as he had a plan to defend the battleship. Despite some hesitation, Shima obliged, and Sanada used the surrounding debris to create a rocky cover around Yamato to protect it from the flagship's gunshots. Just moments after their encounter with Andromeda, Todo contacted all ships in the solar system to inform them that the Yamato crew had been cleared of all charges. He also ordered the battleship's crew to find out the truth behind the apparent crisis ahead of them.[42]

The 11th planet and Kodai's struggles[]

For this topic in more detail, see Battle of the eleventh planet

As Yamato made its way outside of the Solar system, it came across a lone Cosmo Marine, Master Sergeant Shiori Nagakura, who was fleeing from the 11th planet. She informed them that the planet had been attacked by the Gatlantis Empire. Despite headquarters' refusal to permit a rescue mission for the civilians stranded there, the ship's senior officers convened in the central operations room to discuss their next steps. Shima pointed out that they would reach Terezart in 29 days if they stayed on course, but any detour to the 11th planet would extend this time.[43]

Kodai Shima Sanada 11th planet

Regardless of this, Kodai decided to carry out a rescue operation for the 11th planet's civilians. Shima was at the helm for the operation and deployed Yamato's rocket anchor to stabilize the battleship inside a canyon against the 11th planet's winds while bringing all the civilian survivors on board.[43] Lt. Keyman reported that tens of thousands of Gatlantean battleships were assembling in a peculiar formation in orbit. Shima was surprised by the enormous number of ships, and Sanada deduced that they were constructing some sort of accelerator that would turn the 11th planet's artificial sun into a supernova. Shima hurried Kodai to leave the planet, but the XO realized that the resulting blast from the accelerator would hit Earth directly.[44]

Kodai Shima and Sanada wave motion gun room

Shima congratulates Kodai on his tactics after the battle of the eleventh planet

Following Keyman's suggestion, Kodai decided to shoot the Wave-motion Gun at the artificial sun, resulting in an interference wave that disabled all Gatlantean vessels without causing any casualties. Shima and Sanada visited him in the Wave-motion Gun's room, and Shima praised his efforts to use the gun without causing any harm. Kodai, however, still felt he had broken the promise to Stasha.[44]

After the end of the battle, the senior officers met in the central operations room to decide their next moves. Keyman suggested they head for planet Stravase, a world in the general direction of Terezart, where they could entrust the rescued civilians to a Garmillan fleet headed toward Earth. Shima later reported the proposition to Kodai, and he told him he'd check the route on the main bridge.[41]

Shima confronts Kodai

Shima scolds Kodai

At that moment, Mori decided to reveal her presence on board to Kodai by passing right in front of him but ignoring him, much to Shima's concern. Later, in the restrooms, Shima approached Kodai again and stated that he was too tense to handle the mission. He also wondered aloud if they would have gone to Terezart even if they hadn't received their visions, hinting at Mori, who had been the only former crew member not to be called by the spirit of the deceased. Kodai was surprised that Shima knew she had boarded the ship without his consent, but he playfully put his fist under his chin and told him to be honest with his feelings and that military regulations didn't matter much to their crew, so he had no reason to focus on them.[41]

Mori later arrived at the bridge when they reached Stravase, and Kodai assigned her to oversee the transfer of the civilians. When Shima heard the formal and cold way in which the two addressed each other, he sighed. As the transfer began, Shima, Tokugawa, and Sanada openly discussed the possibility of the acting captain saying farewell to the colonists, doing their best to subtly encourage Kodai to go talk to Mori. Kodai immediately understood their intent, and left in a hurry, and the three officers looked back smiling.[41]

Fighting Gatlantis[]

Shima during the Battle on Planet Stravase

Shima during the Battle on Planet Stravase

After Kodai left, a large Garmillas fleet suddenly appeared in orbit. Shima tried to ask Keyman for an explanation but found that the Lieutenant wasn't on the bridge. A battle broke out, and Admiral Hijikata, whom they had rescued on the eleventh planet, took command on the bridge. At his orders, Shima pushed the engine to maximum output and rammed the enemy flagship. As interplanetary ballistic missiles bombarded the surface, Hijikata ordered him to stay in low orbit to allow Kodai's vehicles to board as soon as they returned.[45]

Suddenly, Mori jumped off from one of the Garmillan ships, and Kodai turned his plane toward the collapsing surface to save her, causing Shima to scream out his name. However, thanks to a plan quickly thought up by Sanada and Hijikata, the pair was saved.[45]

Shima meeting 2202

Shima observes the data on Terezart

Days later, he attended a meeting in the operations room and informed the crew that they had completed one-third of the journey to Terezart. He also mentioned that they would soon come across the White Comet, the quasar that Sanada had detected weeks earlier. Kodai suspected it to be a Gatlantean base.[46] Teresa later sent Yamato another communication, which carried an unknown form of energy similar in behavior to antimatter. The senior officers convened in a meeting to discuss the information that the goddess had relayed to them, and Sanada revealed that the entirety of planet Terezart had been covered in an artificial rock encasement. Shima asked about how they were supposed to rescue the goddess if they couldn't contact her because of it.[47]

Shima warps away from the dimensional fault 2202

Shima rides the shockwave to warp Yamato from the fault

The battleship was suddenly attacked by waves of missiles. Shima attempted evasive maneuvers, but despite fleeing to a large enough distance to shake off any supposed pursuers, the missiles kept surrounding Yamato. At Kodai's orders, he performed a warp to escape the enemy, but the battleship warped out inside an enclosed void. He felt as if they had entered a dimensional fault, similar to their journey years ago, and asked Kodai if he thought the same. The ship was attacked yet again, and due to the space's peculiar characteristics, Shima was forced to take the battleship toward an artificial structure nearby.[47]

Upon entering the structure, Sanada realized that it was the connection between the fault and regular space. This meant that if they managed to trigger a warp by igniting the space surrounding them and traveling over the explosion wave, they could have escaped back to their universe. Tokugawa pointed out the dangers of such a proposition, but Shima said that both he and the Chief Engineer would carry half of the responsibility. Suddenly, an energy reaction filled the structure, similar to their theory. At Hijikata and Kodai's request, Shima used the resulting shockwave to escape the dimensional fault.[47]

Shima tries to control Yamato against the White Comet

Shima tries to control Yamato away from the White Comet

Afterwards, Shima was on the bridge when the White Comet suddenly warped in front of Yamato. Despite his efforts, he couldn't steer the ship away from the massive gravitational forces of the object, which he described as clearly artificial. However, he soon reported that the interference was weakening and attempted to free Yamato from the White Comet, but the battleship got caught up in its gravity again. Suddenly, the gravitational waves ceased completely, and Hijikata ordered him to warp away immediately.[48]

As Yamato approached Terezart, a meeting was held to discuss the strategy for the upcoming Terezart Landing Operation. Kodai announced his plan to use the Wave-motion Gun to blow up a portion of the artificial crust and hit the enemy with the debris. Shima praised the tactic, as it would also protect the ship's flanks. However, during the operation, Yamato became trapped in turbulence and was forced to fire the DWIE directly at the enemy fleet. Shima expressed his support for Kodai, stating that it would have been his shot too.[49]

After the planet successfully liberated from the Gatlantean forces, Terezart was blockaded by a fleet of Garmillan warships loyal to the deposed Supreme Leader Abelt Desler. The Yamato crew lost contact with the ground team sent to meet Teresa. Keyman volunteered to go to the ground team in person, and Shima asked if he could manage, given he'd only have a thirty-second window. The Lieutenant chose to go anyway. Shima expertly piloted the Yamato in a face-off against the Garmillas fleet. However, the battleship's engine suddenly deactivated, and he was forced to crash-land it in Terezart's ocean, where it stayed idle and surrounded by the enemy for days. Frustrated, he compared the fleet hovering over them to vultures.[50][51]

Shima takes off on Terezart

Suddenly, the engine reactivated without any apparent reason, causing Tokugawa to worry about the possibility of it going out of control. However, Hijikata ordered Shima to take off and ignored any possible danger, prompting Shima to ask the Chief Engineer if everything would be all right. The old man frustratedly replied to do whatever he wanted, and Shima complied with Hijikata's order. As the battleship left the planet, Teresa's light engulfed it and rendered it intangible and invisible, surprising him.[51]

The Battle of Saturn and Ginga[]

For this topic in more detail, see Battle of Saturn and Attack on the annihilation missile fleet

Yamato returned to the solar system, preparing for a Gatlantean invasion of Earth. During the journey back, Shima noticed Tokugawa's exhaustion and mentioned that they had already performed five warps, exceeding the daily limit of three. Ota also informed him that the Anti-Wave Lattice infecting the engine was still active, putting the Chief Engineer in a difficult position. In a later meeting, Sanada suggested using the lattice to boost the Wave-motion Gun's energy output. Shima stated that since they couldn't remove it, they would burn it off with the gun, but was concerned about potential dangers. He and the other officers discussed the Gatlantis Empire's motive to annihilate all life throughout the universe and decided to use the enhanced gun.[52]

On May 8,[18] Yamato received information that the Cosmo Navy was fighting the Gatlantean navy at Saturn. The bridge crew watched a video of the Wave-motion Gun fleet warping into the battlefield. Shima commented that they had no choice but to trust them. Two days later,[18] the battleship warped out at Saturn, while the Earth forces were retreating. They tried to fire the DWIE, but the engine suddenly deactivated, and the ship fell inside the White Comet.[53] Facing a desperate situation, Hijikata ordered everyone to abandon the ship, but Shima refused to leave his post. Tokugawa came to his side and told him that, while everyone felt the same way, their duty as the ship's officer was to set an example for the crew and leave. Defeated, Shima followed through and was among the crew members who managed to evacuate to the Antares in time.[54]

After being moved with other members of the bridge crew to the Ginga, Yamato's sister ship, he was welcomed by crew members who had not gone to Terezart. Upon arrival, they were greeted by Lt. Commander Saki Todo, the ship's captain, and briefed on the strategy for the upcoming battle. To train Ginga's command AI, they were asked to take command of the ship, allowing it to learn from the battle experience and share it with the AI mainframe in the time fault factory. Consequently, Shima worked alongside Ginga's Chief Navigator, Ensign Mina Ichinose, as the ship took the lead in the joint Garmillas-Earth forces against the Gatlantean fleet.[54]

Shima was surprised to see that the Cosmo Reverse had been equipped on Ginga and was being used to boost the allied fleet's wave-motion shields. During the attack, Captain Todo agreed with the AI and ordered the launch of Operation Black Bird, a tactic that involved unmanned crafts penetrating the enemy line and deactivating the Gatlantean ships via Wave-motion Resonance. For the plan to work, a pilot would have to lead the assault in what was effectively a suicide mission. Shima was shocked to realize that Kato had volunteered for the mission. Increasingly angered, he stopped Todo's proclamation that, with the Time Fault producing ships at full regime, the Earth essentially had infinite force to fight Gatlantis. He asked her about those who would man these infinite fleets, but the captain coldly replied that unmanned fleets controlled by AI and artificial soldiers would soon become a reality. The Wave-motion Resonance was activated, and the entire Gatlantis fleet collapsed under it. Shima sat back, gritting his teeth and commenting that what they were doing was insanity. The XO of the Ginga simply replied that sanity did not win wars.[54]

Rescuing Yamato[]

After the attack ended, Ginga continued to maintain the defense line on Saturn, coming dangerously close to the White Comet. He sternly instructed Ichinose on how to control the ship, telling her that she hadn't been fast enough. She muttered that her hands were useless and that she would swap them out soon, explaining that they were producing high-precision artificial limbs in the time fault as they spoke. Shima scoffed but remained silent.[55]

Shima Ichinose Plan G

Shima is shocked at Ichinose's devotion to Project G

The White Comet managed to warp past them, and a battle broke out over Mars. To Shima's shock, the AI informed the Ginga crew that the joint forces had already lost 50% of their assets, and that Project G had entered into effect, giving it command. The XO explained that the purpose of the project was to preserve Earthling DNA in case the people of Earth were to modify themselves to survive the war. Ginga would leave the combat zone in pursuit of a new home world. Its crew, mostly female, would receive only partial modification while maintaining the ability to reproduce, effectively becoming a human breeding stock. Horrified by the prospect, Shima stood up and distressedly yelled at Ichinose, asking if they really had to go that far.[56]

At that moment, Captain Yamanami reported from Andromeda that Yamato had been spotted inside the White Comet and would need help to escape its gravity. Shima was relieved, but the command AI refused to put Project G at risk to save the battleship. However, Captain Todo deactivated it and took command of the ship, using its CRS to help free Yamato.[56]

Shima and Kodai discuss Mori's amnesia

Shima and Kodai discuss Mori's amnesia

Yamato was taken to a drydock on Mars for repairs, and Shima met Kodai on board. He learned that Mori had amnesia after their crash landing inside the comet and tried to comfort Kodai. Shima noticed that he was distressed, although Kodai denied it. When they passed near Mori, he asked if what he had heard was true. Kodai confirmed it and walked away, not easing Shima's worries. Later, Shima attended a meeting where the crew went over their strategy for one last assault against the White Comet. As the battleship navigated toward Earth, Keyman spotted a weapon charging. Despite Shima being unable to read anything ahead, Hijikata ordered a short warp, and Yamato engaged in battle against the Supreme Leader again.[57]

Shima calls for Tokugawa

Shima calls out Tokugawa's name in desperation

One day later,[18][58] Yamato warped out directly in front of the White Comet and used the enhanced DWIE to blast off its gas cover. With the help of a fleet of Garmillan Dimensional Submarines, the battleship emerged inside of the enemy fortress. Shima commented that they had entered the belly of the beast. The Yamato was subjected to a relentless attack, and Shima worried about how much damage the ship could take before giving out. Suddenly, Tokugawa spoke to the bridge over the intercom, dying after securing the ship's navigation, and he desperately called out his name.[59]

As he continued to guide the ship toward throne room at the center of the White Comet, Yamato became stuck in the corridor. A small team managed to break through and confront Zworder, the Gatlantean emperor, but he activated a device that wiped out all of his people except himself and fused with the White Comet itself, turning it into a weapon of mass destruction. Shima took the ship out of the transforming fortress but worried about how much it could resist with its engine going critical.[60]

Shima aboard Watatsumi

Shima runs through the crowd after noticing Kodai

Faced with an unwinnable scenario, Kodai, now officially captain after Hijikata's death, ordered an evacuation. Shima left and boarded the battleship Watatsumi. As they departed, he saluted the idle Yamato, and noticed that Kodai had remained on board. He called out Kodai's name and tried to push through the crowd, but to no avail. Kodai attempted to direct the battleship toward the superweapon to make one last suicide run, but suddenly, the melting engine opened a pathway for Teresa to manifest in the universe. Shima watched as the goddess engulfed Yamato in her light, and together with it wiped out the remnants of the White Comet.[60]

The referendum[]

Six months later, on the fourth anniversary of Okita's death, the former Yamato crew met at Hero's Hill, where an epitaph had been set up for their comrade who had died during the Gatlantis Campaign. As Kodai's name came up at the bottom of the list of fallen crew members, Shima clenched his fist in frustration and angrily addressed his deceased friend.[61]

Shima calls out for Kodai in the deserted first bridge

The same day, Yamato suddenly reappeared inside the time fault. Shima and Sanada immediately went to investigate and broke into the first bridge, where Shima called out for Kodai. They found it deserted, but Yamazaki reported finding a survivor in the engine room, who Shima immediately identified as Yamamoto. She later reported that both Kodai and Mori, who had stayed behind with him, had remained in Teresa's higher dimension. Sanada devised a plan to send Yamato there and rescue them. The plan would involve the collapse of the time fault. As a result, a national referendum was called to let the people of the Earth Federation decide whether to proceed with it.[61]

Yamato crew referendum speech

Shima and the rest of the bridge crew at the referendum's public hearing

On the night of the voting, Shima attended a public hearing held at the Grand Court's bench courtroom where General Kotetsu Serizawa and Sanada represented the two sides of the referendum. After Serizawa's speech, Shima immediately got up, telling his confused crewmates that they had work to do. Without waiting to know the results of the vote, the crew went to reactivate the repaired Yamato. The referendum turned out in their favor, and Yamato was launched into the higher dimension. Shima looked out of the first bridge from his navigation console as the ship rescued Mori and Kodai.[61]

The 65th Escort Corps[]

Following its return to Earth, Yamato became the flagship of the newly created 65th Escort Corps under Captain Yamanami, and its crew was split among the three ships that made up the fleet. With Sanada's promotion to commanding officer of the battlecarrier Hyuga, Shima became Yamato's new Executive Officer and was also given a promotion to Lieutenant Commander.[6][62]

Shima talks to Tasuke Tokugawa and Bando

XO Shima advises cadets Tokugawa and Bando

On October 1, 2205,[58] the day before Yamato's take off toward a diplomatic mission in the Salezar system, he and other former members of the bridge crew intervened in a fight between the trainees of the 38th class of Space Defense Academy, who would join up with the fleet for the trip. He approached two trainees, one of whom was Tasuke Tokugawa, Chief Engineer Tokugawa's son. He told the two that Yamato was tough and that they had to be prepared. He then approached Hoshina, commenting on the tense atmosphere and hoping that the coming journey would help the cadets to mature. Hoshina asked about Kodai, and Shima commented that he had left all his duties on him, and had presumably gone to Hero's Hill to sort out his stress.[62]

Shima advises Domon

Shima tells Domon to relax his shoulder moments before take-off

The next morning, Shima attended a speech by General Serizawa to the young cadets. At the end of the speech, Kodai ordered them to take off immediately, much to his and everyone else's surprise. Kodai also instructed the young Warrant Officer Rysuke Domon, who had obtained his place on board by falsifying his record, to take the helm for departure. Seeing Domon's serious expression, Shima told him to relax. Domon hesitated to take off, and it seemed like he was directing the ship, Yamato, toward a nearby island. Concerned, Shima stood up from his seat, but then the cadet immediately took off. He sat back down and watched Domon with a smile as the cadet looked stunned at the sun.[63]

Shima and Niimi report Garmillas's destruction

Shima and Niimi report Garmillas's destruction

Weeks later, Shima and Niimi reported to Kodai and Mori news of planet Garmillas's destruction. They informed the captain that they did not know if the attack had come from the Bolar Federation, an enemy nation of the Garmillas Empire, and that many civilian ships of the Garmillas Immigration Fleet had probably been caught in the explosion. Additionally Shima reported that Iscandar had left its orbit and was accellerating to alarming speeds, and that Desler's fleet was in pursuit to try and rescue the civilians that had landed on its surface. However, he doubted the small force could deal with the catastrophe alone.[64]

The fleet arrived at a subspace gate that could potentially lead them directly to the Large Magellanic Cloud. However, Earth HQ refused to authorize their intervention, concerned about the possibility of the Earth Federation getting entangled in a war with Bolar. Shima approached Kodai in the captain's cabin and expressed the crew's anxiety, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Meanwhile, Domon led a group of young cadets in a revolt, seeking to remove the members of the peace delegation and compel the Yamato to pass through the gate. To his surprise, Kodai endorsed his plan and directed the Yamato towards the battle zone. However, Shima, who had anticipated this turn of events, simply smiled to himself.[65]

The Iscandar Incident[]

Shima confronts Kodai Battle in the Vorzon System

Shima confronts Kodai on using the Wave-motion Gun

Shima helmed Yamato through their rescue of Iscandar, a battle they fought against an unknown enemy called Dezariam.[65] He frowned when they spotted the bulk of the enemy fleet in orbit around Iscandar, immobile despite their attack. Later, Shima attended a meeting between the 65th Escort Corps and Desler fleet officers, where Sanada explained that Dezariam had harvested energy from Garmillas's destruction. Iscandar had been warped by the enemy to the Vorzon system, and Shima understood that Dezariam intended to destroy the system's second planet, the already unstable Garmario, to take its energy too. Kodai expressed his intention to use the Wave-motion Gun to destroy the world, and Shima, concerned, asked if he had considered any other alternatives. He also voiced his worry about the plan possibly affecting Iscandar. Kodai simply stated that they would carry out the operation while Iscandar was out of the danger zone.[66]

Shima Battle in the Vorzon System

Shima tries to get Yamato away from the shockwave

During the next battle, the enemy maneuvered Iscandar into the line of fire of Yamato's Wave-motion Gun, and Shima noted they were using the entire planet as a human shield. Yamato's escort ships managed to push the planet away, creating an opportunity to fire, but the ship's engines were depleted of energy after the shot, leaving the crew at the mercy of the shockwaves from Garmario's destruction. Shima suggested to activate the auxilliary engines, but Yamazaki reported that it was impossible. However, Yamato was saved at the last minute by the swift intervention of Mori's carrier, the Asuka.[66]

Shima comments on Desler

Shima explains Desler's way of apologising

The enemy flagship, an enormous space fortress, suddenly appeared. Kodai tried to negotiate with the enemy commander, but Supreme Leader Desler shot at them with his flagship's Desler cannon, which surprisingly did not affect them. Desler soon hailed Yamato's bridge, stating he had underestimated the enemy and asked to regroup.. Shima scoffed, and answered Domon's frustration by stating that was the Leader's way of apologising. He was present at Desler's meeting with the corps's officers and informed that there was no guarantee they could have caught up with the enemy, who was heading for the star Vorzon.[67]

Shima grabs Kodai

Shima angrily confronts Kodai

After a failed operation to save the immigrants from the surface, Queen Stasha called for a ceasefire.[67] Kodai went to the palace and, upon returning, informed the crew that the Queen had decided to self-destruct her planet. Enraged, Shima grabbed him by his ascot and asked why he didn't bring her with them by force, but Kodai defeatedly replied that her resolve was too strong. As the Garmillas civilians left the system, Desler turned around and thrust his flagship onto the Dezarian space fortress and asked Kodai to fire the Wave-motion Gun at him, hoping to damage the enemy that way.[68]

Shima relays the plan to Mori and Sanada

Shima relays the plan to Mori and Sanada

Kodai chose to follow the Leader's request, which made Shima and Domon upset. The cadet halted the firing process and pointed his gun at the captain. Despite Shima's attempts to stop him, his actions convinced Kodai, and he agreed to start a rescue operation for Supreme Leader Desler. Kodai left for the surface of Iscandar to rescue Stasha and her sister, while Shima took command of the Yamato and communicated the plan to Sanada and Mori. As the enemy aimed their main weapon at them, Shima ordered the fleet and the immigrant ships to scatter. However, Stasha, now on Kodai's vessel, triggered a self-destruct mechanism on Iscandar, which destroyed the entire enemy fleet.[69]

With the Dezarian forces destroyed, the immigrant fleet resumed its journey toward their new homeworld, and the 65th Escort Corps began making its way back to the Earth.[69]

The Air Force and Operation DAD[]

Following the 65th's return to Earth, the fleet was dissolved and alla personnel was moved to new assignments. While on the surface this seemed like punishment for their reckless actions during the Iscandar Incident, Todo and Serizawa made these changes to further Operation DAD, their secret plan to defend the Earth against a probable Dezariam invasion.[70][71]

Gladiator bridge

Shima on the Gladiator's bridge

Dezariam symapthizers began infiltrating the Earth Federation in the years between 2205 and 2207, and fearing spies had entered the ranks of the Cosmo Navy, Serizawa transferred Shima, Hayashi, and Tasuke Tokugawa to the Earth Federation Air Force. They were assigned to the unmanned Limited Autonomous Air Defense System, which was developed based on Shima's piloting skills. Since the unmanned fleet operated on a separate network from that of the navy, it could serve as a safeguard in case of internal sabotage. Shima was made captain of the Unmanned Fleet Command Ship Gladiator, thus putting him in command of the entire air defense system. While he and his crew felt like outsiders in the Air Force, they put up with it looking forward to the moment they'd be needed.[70][71]

Shima aboard the Gladiator with console active

Shima during the Ground Reverse Interception Operation

In October 2207, Dezariam made its move, and the space fortress Ground Reverse began invading the solar system. The enemy object broke through the defense lines near Mars and the Asteroid Belt. Additionally, a cyber attack from inside the Defense Force sabotaged the communication network. In response, HQ deployed the Limited Autonomous Air Defense System, and Shima took the field. Since the Wave-motion Gun had proved ineffective against their target, he ordered the fleet to perform hit-and-run attacks with concentrated fire. When the fleet's engines suddenly shut down, Shima realized that a bug had been planted in their system from the start. They found themselves surrounded by a Dezarian fleet, but at that moment, Nanbu sent them the release codes necessary to reactivate their ships. Although they were successful, the Gladiator sustained heavy damage and burned up. Shima and the rest of the crew were able to land in an escape pod, but the Limited Autonomous Air Defense System was lost.[71]

Shima and Kodai shake hands 2207

Shima and Kodai shake hands after meeting at Hero's Hill

When the Ground Reverse landed and Dezarian forces invaded the New Capital, Shima and the others were ordered to gather at the Yamato with the rest of the 65th's former crews. They received the coordinates of the nearest extraction point, which turned out to be Hero's Hill. There, they met Doctor Sado, who was drinking alone. Shima jokingly asked him for a drink, and soon another group, including Kodai and Mori, joined them. The two best friends shook hands, and Kodai informed Shima that their pick-up craft had been shot down. Shima jokingly replied that he had just destroyed a thousand times its cost in taxpayer money. The group was then contacted by Domon, who had come to take them to the Asuka "the Iscandar way". As they made their way to his location in the Presidential Building's hangar, Shima asked Kodai what he meant, and he explained that Domon would come pick them up aboard the Cosmo Hound.[72]

They managed to escape and boarded the Asuka, which promptly warped away from Earth's orbit. However, Mori remained stranded on Earth. While aboard the carrier, Shima and the others were surprised to hear a song playing around them.[72]

Personality[]

Daigo and Daisuke Shima memory

Daigo and Daisuke Shima in Daisuke's memories

One of Daisuke Shima's final memories of his father is of the warmth that he showed to Daisuke and his promise of a peaceful future. The violation of that promise when he was killed hardened Daisuke's hatred of the Garmillas.[21] He eventually let go of his hatred, and he came to tacitly support efforts by Okita and Kodai to bring a peaceful end to the war with the Garmillas.[22][31][34]

Shima has a deep bond with his family, including his mother and brother, as well as with his deceased father. Daigo inspired him to become a sailor, and his code of ethics still influences Shima in his adulthood.[9][12][15] He is also close to his brother Jiro, who greatly admires him.[14][11][10]

Under most circumstances, Shima is a relatively controlled individual. He is calmer, less impetuous, and less outspoken than his long-time friend, Kodai. Their contrasting personalities complement one another, although in his desire to support Kodai, Shima has occasionally followed him into actions that may not be entirely wise.[73] At other times, Shima's reserved personality helps Kodai to see a more reasonable path.[74] Their friendship has taken various forms over their years of service together. They have been friends, rivals, and finally, Shima took the role of Kodai's Executive Officer during the Iscandar Incident. While he trusts his friend completely, he is also sometimes hurt by his stubborness.[6][5]

His dedication to duty was so strong that, despite questioning the policy, Shima remained silent and continued to fulfill his obligations after the Earth Federation's decision to construct wave-motion energy weapons in violation of its treaty with Iscandar.[75]

Shima is a friendly and outgoing individual who formed many positive relationships during the journey to Iscandar. Chief Engineer Hikozaemon Tokugawa was a mentor for him and served as his voice of reason as he dealt with the weight of the possibility of the Earthlings having started the Garmillas War.[22] Initially, he was hostile to Emergency Chief Susumu Yamazaki, but the two eventually mended their relationship.[15][34] During the journey to Iscandar, he also bonded with Akira Yamamoto over their shared, conflicting feelings about the Garmillans and the war.[22]

After being promoted to XO, Shima took on the role of an older brother figure for the younger members of the Yamato crew. He made multiple attempts to help out the young Ryusuke Domon and did his best to maintain the ship's morale as part of his new responsibilities.[6][62][63]

Manga[]

In the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 manga Shima's story is almost identical to his anime counterpart. In this version however, his frustration with Yamazaki is much more deep-rooted, and he ends up calling him an idiot during the First Battle against Domel.[76] In response, his following conversation with Tokugawa is much more heated in the manga, and the Chief Engineer brutally beats him for his narrow-mindedness. This makes Shima rethink his convictions, but Tokugawa is also sentenced to the brig.[77]

Behind the scenes[]

Shima was redesigned by Nobutero Yuki. Compared to his original series counterpart, his skin is slightly darker and his face is designed to be somewhat more handsome.[78] Unlike in the original series, in which he had a rigid personality and prioritized his mission, in Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels, he has a slightly lighter personality. This change was made to balance out the fact that, due to the increase in the number of characters, Kodai's personality was changed to be less hot-blooded.[79]

He is portrayed by Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese and by Ricco Fajardo in English.
