Captain Daigo Shima was an officer in the United Nations Cosmo Navy and the father of Daisuke and Jiro Shima.
Captain Shima served as commanding officer of the cruiser Murasame in 2191. He and his ship were part of the Cosmo Navy's inner planet fleet ordered to head for the outer solar system and intercept ships of the Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet that had been detected entering the system. Before departing, he assured his son Daisuke that friendly relations could be established with the aliens. However, as the UNCN vessels neared the Garmillas ships, General Kotetsu Serizawa ordered the fleet commander, Juzo Okita, to open fire without waiting for the aliens to act. When Okita refused, Captain Shima was placed in command by Serizawa, and he grudgingly carried out the order. Murasame's defenses quickly collapsed in the counterattack, and Shima sent out a call to abandon ship before he and all but of one of his crew died in the cruiser's destruction ("A World I Once Saw").
Daisuke grew up believing official propaganda that the Earth fleet was attacked in an unprovoked first strike by the Garmillas, and sought to avenge his father's death ("A World I Once Saw"). Late in the year 2202, Teresa used his father's image to convey a telepathic request to take the space battleship Yamato to the distant planet Terezart ("Tension – Reach the Embassy on the Moon").
