A crowd of UNCF members in early 2199
The uniforms of the Earth Federation Cosmo Force consist of three primary sets, along with various variants, work clothes, and specialized protective gear. While certain uniform sets are shared across the Cosmo Force's two main branches—the Cosmo Navy and the Cosmo Marines—both also maintains distinct uniforms.
Most EFCF uniforms feature the organization's emblem on the upper left sleeve or the chest.[1]
Ground Personnel and Staff[]
Ground personnel of the Cosmo Force typically wear either uniform Type B or Type C.[2] Type B is issued to staff assigned to the Central Command Center[3] and similar high-level facilities.[1] Its color scheme has changed over time, from brown in the late 22nd century during the Great Garmillas War,[1] to grey following the founding of the Earth Federation.[3] A blue variant of the uniform Type B is worn by spaceport personnel, sometimes with a cap.[4]
Uniform Type C[2] is worn by most other ground officers. It's typically colored in military green for men and blue for women,[5] though a military green version for female personnel also exists, more similar to the male counterpart.[6] Military inspectors wear a navy blue variant of the uniform.[7] The male version of this uniform type features a unique set of rank insignia, shared with only a few other uniform sets. Golden cuff stripes are also used to denote rank.[5] Uniform Type C can be worn with a scarf or with a black tie.[5][8]
In addition to standard uniforms, staff officers stationed at headquarters may wear the UNCF pantsuit, which displays rank on the cuffs and on the shirt below the jacket.[9] The General Commander-in-Chief, Heikuro Todo, wears a distinct uniform[3] previously worn by officials of the United Nations.[10]

Command[]
Command-level officers of the Cosmo Navy wear various uniforms depending on their assignment and rank. Two main uniform types are designated for ship captains and commanding officers: the Captain Uniform[11] and the Captain Formal Uniform, the latter typically worn by senior officers.[12]
The collar of the captain coat can be either red,[1] blue[3] or yellow;[13] green was employed during the Great Garmillas War[1] and is now reserved for personnel in the Transport Fleet.[14] The coat is black with a gold border for men[1] and light grey with a silver border for females. Each version includes a captain's hat, slightly larger in size for men, with corresponding gold or silver accents.[15]
The Captain Formal Uniform includes yellow accents on the cuffs, a round belt buckle, and is worn over a buttonless white tunic.[1] It always includes a scarf,[1] while the standard variant might[15] or might not.[3]
The Captain Uniform has folded cuffs (which could[3] have golden lining),[15] a rectangular belt buckle, and is worn over an underlayer resembling the uniform of the space battleship Yamato: For men it includes a plain white tunic with loose-fitting pants;[3] For women a white bodysuit with black stripes down the legs and heeled boots.[15]
The Captain Uniform has replaced an earlier design worn by lower-ranking Commanding Officers, which included a dark-blue coat with an orange collar and silver borders worn over a red uniform.[1]
Executive officers[]
Executive officers aboard Cosmo Navy ships wear a silver-bordered variant of the Captain Formal Uniform, using the same collar color of their vessel's commanding officer.[3] This uniform replaced a previous version used during the Garmillas War, which consisted of a blue tunic with a side closure, accompanied by a cap or a captain hat. This older uniform could be worn with[1] or without an orange scarf.[10]
Sailors[]
Cosmo Navy sailors wear the Cosmo Force uniform Type A, a gender-neutral navy blue one-piece jumpsuit designed for general-duty personnel. The uniform may be worn with[5] or without an orange scarf,[3] and for those stationed aboard spacecraft, it can also include a naval-style cap bearing the name of the ship or with a white helmet.[1] By 2202, uniform Type A includes three black lines on each upper arm.[3]
Following the founding of the Earth Federation, a grey variant of the Type A uniform was introduced,[3] partially[14] replacing the earlier blue version.[13] The Tranport Fleet continues to use the blue variant, with captains of transport ships also wearing it.[14]
Uniform Type A can be adapted by equipping it with additional gear such as gloves, boots, a pilot helmet, and a back-mounted life support system, converting it into a pressurized flight suit.[16]
Pilots[]
Although fighter pilots are formally part of the Cosmo Navy,[17] and sometimes fall under the organizational structure of Space Defense Command,[18] they also maintain a distinct set of uniforms.[17][19]
Pilots typically wear a bomber jacket adorned with various emblems over their standard duty uniform, which is most often the Cosmo Force Uniform Type A.[17] The air units' service uniform consists of a white variant of the uniform Type B.[19][20] Pilots can also wear a red beret with the UNCF logo for air units.[9]
The standard flight suit for active pilots is dark grey with black accents and features a red harness system. It is accompanied by a white pilot helmet.[14] Air corps trainees wear a visually similar flight suit in orange, which includes a UNCF logo on the right breast and a UNCF patch on the left upper arm.[21][22]
Cosmo Marines Uniforms and Gear[]
Uniforms[]
Members of the Cosmo Marine's Space Cavalry wear the Space Cavalry Uniform,[23] which consists of a military green coat and cargo pants, paired with black boots and a white scarf.[24] The unit insignia, displayed on the left arm, has changed multiple times. During the Garmillas War, it featured the abbreviation UNCM (United Nations Cosmo Marines) and was colored blue and gold,[25] in line with other Cosmo Force insignia.[5] Following the establishment of the Earth Federation, the abbreviation UNCM was retained, but the colors were updated to grey and green.[14] After the branch was officially renamed to Earth Federation Cosmo Marines, the insignia was changed to display the abbreviation EFCF (Earth Federation Cosmo Force).[8]
The Service Uniform[20] consists of a similar blue coat worn with white pants and a strapless black belt. It is accompanied by black shoes instead of boots. Unlike the Space Cavalry Uniform, the Service Uniform does not display any logos, but it utilizes a distinct rank insignia system,[19] while the Space Cavalry Uniform has no rank insignias.[25] Both uniforms are identical for male and female personnel.[14][19]
Officers of the Space Cavalry can wear the Cosmo Force uniform Type C. This version features buttons engraved with the star emblem used in the Cosmo Marines logo and may be worn with a ceremonial aiguillette.[24]
Combat equipment[]
Members of the Space Cavalry typically wear the Space Cavalry Combat Spacesuit[26] while on duty in the field. This is a slim, green suit featuring black fabric around the neck and shoulders, with reinforced yellow plates at the joints.[27] It is often paired with a removable[28] vest that includes a hardpoint on the left breast for mounting a combat knife, as well as four equipment containers positioned just above the belt.[27] For high mobility, a vernier backpack can be attached to the jacket;[27] the thrusters can be retracted via a control button.[26]
In vacuum environments, soldiers wear the Space Cavalry Spacesuit,[29] a reinforced combat spacesuit. It retains the green coloration and includes similar knife-mounting options and four containers, two on each side of the waist. The helmet features an orange visor,[24] and a vital signs monitor is embedded on the right arm.[29] Rank insignia,[29] a simplified version of the one used on the Service Uniform,[19][N 1] is displayed on the left shoulder pad, while unit affiliation appears on the right.[29] Regimental commanders have a star insignia on their helmets.[24]
Work Uniforms[]
The Cosmo Force a variety of work uniforms, with specific designs depending on the assignment of the personnel. These uniforms typically consist of jumpsuits accompanied by a cap, with color schemes and design elements varying by function.[1][3]
The mechanic uniform[2] consists of an orange jumpsuit paired with a blue vest and cap. The back of the vest features the Japanese character "備" (sei), the first character in "整備士" (seibishi, meaning "mechanic"), along with a two-digit identification number.[1]
The air traffic controller uniform[2] includes a light-blue jumpsuit and a blue vest of slightly different design. It is typically worn with a pair of headphones and a radio.[1]
Work clothing[30] consists of a dark grey jumpsuit featuring a light grey vertical stripe running from the right shoulder down to just below the belt line. It may be worn with a matching grey cap and a brown belt.[3]
Tactical Gear[]
When operating within atmosphere, Cosmo Force personnel wear specialized tactical gear tailored to their specific assignments.[24][31]
Members of the police force are equipped with grey-green vests and pants, a white helmet, and a black armband bearing the Japanese word for "police" (警察).[5][24] A Cosmo Force insignia is displayed on the left arm, while the back of the vest features the abbreviation "UNCF", identifying them as members of the Cosmo Force,[5][24] despite their operational independence from the branch’s command structure.[32]
Emergency Deployment Unit personnel wear similar gear, but in a darker shade of grey. Their vests are shorter in design, and their dark grey helmets are equipped with visors. When combined with a face-covering mouth cloth, the helmet fully conceals their face.[31]
Spacesuits and airtight clothing[]
The Cosmo Force employs a variety of specialized spacesuits and airtight garments.[1][33][34][35]
The standard spacesuit is primarily blue with black gloves, boots, and a black neckline. A yellow vertical line runs down the center of the torso from the neck, with orange detailing around the arms and legs. It is equipped with movable nozzles on the back and features a display embedded on the back of the left hand.[1]
The Outboard Workwear[2] is a bulky white suit with grey accents and orange details on the arms and legs, designed for ship maintenance in the vacuum of space.[33] It includes a backpack and a wide-visor helmet[33] which is equipped with two flashlights sitting above the shoulders.[36] A ring is mounted on the backpack, and the ship’s registry printed on the backpack. A ship patch is also included on the left arm.[2]
For vacuum-exposed environments, personnel may wear[34] the Airtight Mechanic Suit,[2] an orange airtight jumpsuit with white accents. It features a white helmet and a utility belt for securing tools at the back. Ship affiliation is indicated by a patch on the left arm and the registry printed on the back. A digit is also marked on the rear of the helmet.[34]
Medics wear the[37] Medical Team Spacesuit,[2] a spacesuit with a large domed helmet with a big backpack.[37] The male version is white and has geta-like footwear,[2] while the female version is light pink with grey accents on the sides and has grey boots.[38] The medic emblem used by the UNCF is present on the backpack and the chest.[37]
The Cosmo Navy utilizes a reinforced spacesuit capable of withstanding high G-forces[39] and vacuum exposure. It is visually similar to the Space Cavalry Spacesuit but lacks containers and a combat knife. The suit is blue-gray with a blue visor.[35]
To safely enter hazardous areas, personnel is equipped with[5] protective clothing[2] consisting of an orange hazmat suit equipped with an embedded backpack and a large domed helmet that extends down to the chest. Ship affiliation is indicated by a patch on the left arm and the registry printed on the backpack.[5]
In order for personnel to work in the time fault that was present below the Earth's surface, they were issued the[7] Time Fault Protective Suit.[20] This suit consisted of a grey underlayer worn beneath heavy white armored plating. The base suit included a visorless helmet with white and black detailing, over which a large dome-shaped helmet was fitted. The helmet was integrated into a reinforced shoulder frame that extended into a sizeable backpack unit.[7]
A scale cylinder was equipped onto the backpack, allowing the human body to sustain up to a hour within the time fault. Without the suit, human exposure could not last for more than 10 minutes.[7]
A later version of the Time Fault Protective Suit was also produced, sporting a simplified design.[20]
Uniform patches[]
Uniforms of the Cosmo Force include various patches to display one's affiliation to their branch of service, ship,[1] or other units.[5] These are usually worn on the chest or on the left shoulder.[5] When the United Nations Cosmo Force officially changed its name to Earth Federation Cosmo Force, all badges that used an acronym changed it.[15]
Uniforms often have a colored nametag on the chest.[1][24]
Behind the scenes[]
The uniforms Type A, B, and C, as well as the mechanic and air traffic controller uniforms were designed by Shinichi Yamaoka.[2] He also designed the standard spacesuit and the medic spacesuit. Tsukuito Kusanagi designed the hazmat suit, mechanic airtight gear, and outboard workwear. Nobuteru Yuki designed the rookie pilot flight suit.[21]
As chief character designer, Yuki designed all characters that wore the Captain Formal Uniform in Star Blazers 2199 (Juzo Okita, Ryu Hijikata, Osamu Yamanami, and Daigo Shima).[40][41][42] He also designed Todo and Mamoru Kodai and their unique uniforms.[43] Eiji Ishizu and his XO uniform and Akio Yamamoto and his beret were designed by Yamaoka.[44]
