Sapient species

Sapient species are distinct types of biological life forms that are capable of higher-level thought and make frequent use of technology. Sapient species may be naturally evolved, or the result of intentional design, or a mix of the two. Individual members of sapient species are persons, and they collectively form civilizations.

Unlike many science fiction stories that conflate and confuse sapience (the ability to have a complex and deep understanding of the world) with sentience (the ability to experience the world subjectively), the words "sapient" and "sapience" are used in the correct real-world way on this wiki.
