Space Battleship Yamato Wiki

The Black Bird Squadron was the unmanned fighter unit of the Yamato-class ship Ginga developed by the Earth Federation in the time fault. It participated in the Attack on the annihilation missile fleet during which it carried out Operation Black Bird. It was made out of dozens of Type 0 Model 52 bis Black Bird Fighters.[2]

History[]

During the Attack on the annihilation missile fleet, Ginga's command AI suggested to use the fighters in Operation Black Bird, a plan which sought to use a vast number of mass-produced Wave-motion Cores deployed by the Black Birds to create a powerful energy surge and deactivate part of the invading Gatlantean fleet. However, the fighters' autopilot system wasn't advanced enough to penetrate deep into the enemy formation, thus Lieutenant Junior Grade Saburo Kato took command of a custom Black Bird to lead the unmanned squadron in what could have easily turned into a suicide mission. Despite losing many fighters, the operation was successful and Kato managed to miraculously survive.[2]

The Black Bird squadron was deployed once more at the end of the Decisive Battle off Mars to rescue Captain Osamu Yamanami from the bridge of the sinking Andromeda.[3] Kato later took his personal Black Bird with him when he was reassigned to the Yamato.[4]
