This article is about the Battle in Subspace of 2203. For the similarly named Battle with Desler in Subspace in 2199, see Battle with Desler in Subspace.

The Battle between Dimensions,[3] also known as the Battle in Subspace,[4] was ambush set early in the Gatlantis Campaign by Supreme Leader Abelt Desler for the battleship Yamato inside a dimensional fault of ancient Archelian origin. The operation was planned by Desler both to try and destroy the Earthling warship and to assert his independence from the Gatlantis Empire.

Following the fall of his administration at the hands of the Earthling battleship Yamato in June of 2199, Supreme Leader Abelt Desler and his remaining forces wandered space, waiting for the time to take revenge on the warship. Desler's plans came to fruition in the Battle with Desler in Subspace, but the Leader's flagship was heavily damaged during the fighting, killing all personnel, but miracolously sparing him. He was left adrift through the subspace corridor of the galactic theater gate where he was rescued by the Gatlantis Empire.[5][6][7] Emperor Zworder personally gifted Desler with a personal fleet and a new flagship, the Neu Deusura, wanting to witness a perfect human such as him act freely. However, to make sure Desler followed his every order and didn't rebel, he placed an observer, Mil, another Type Zworder Gatlantean, aboard his flagship. Mil was connected directly to the Great Emperor via Cosmo Wave, and was constantly reporting about the Leader's moves.[7][2]

Thanks to its two spies aboard the battleship communicating with the Great Emperor, Gatlantis managed to track Yamato's position, which was moving toward the occupied planet Terezart to liberate it. In early 2203,[1] Desler was given the task to stop the warship. He had also been in contact with supporters of his fallen regime still on planet Garmillas, and began planning an operation to both liberate himself from Gatlantean control and destroy the battleship.[2]

The Battle[]

Goland missiles aurround Yamato

Yamato is surrounded by Neu Deusura's missiles

Yamato was ambushed in interstellar space while, unbeknownst to its crew, it was flying in warp distance of a dimensional fault created in the far past by the Archelias civilisation. Various waves of Gorland missiles were fired by Neu Deusura from a distance, and thanks to an Instantaneous Material Transporter, they surrounded Yamato from all directions. Acting Captain Susumu Kodai ordered to calculate the number and position of enemy ships through the missiles' line of fire and to raise the Wave-motion Shield, however, due to Desler's usage of the Material Transporter, they were unable to do so.[2]

Warp out dimensional fault 2202

Yamato tried to escape outside of the enemy's firing range, but countless missiles continued to target it. The battleship's subcomputer calculated an escape route to warp through the missile waves. Both Admiral Ryu Hijikata and Captain Kodai agreed that if the enemy had left them such an easy way out, it was probably a trap. However, being left with no other choice, Yamato warped, and ended up falling into the dimensional fault, just as Desler had planned.[2]

The fault was filled with the remnants of a supernova, which, if absorbed by Yamato's Wave-motion Engine, would destroy the ship. Forced to turn off its main engine, the battleship remained stuck in the fault. Desler's fleet warped out directly behind Yamato, and began pursuing them. Hijikata ordered to fire the rear torpedoes at the enemy and to use the auxilliary engines to flee. While the battle unfolded, Mil tried to communicate with Zworder, however, the special properties of the space Desler had chosen as battlefield blocked his telepathy. At the same time, two the four Lascaux-classes making up the fleet assigned to Desler began malfunctioning due to the excessive energy conversion and started missing their shots before imploding completely. Desler's ship kept a warp grid open to keep its engine outside of the fault, avoiding that space's harmful properties. As his powers completely faded away, Mil tried to reach for his gun and shoot Desler, but the Supreme Leader stopped him and took the weapon.[2]

While escaping, Yamato encountered and entered into an enormous tubular structure of Archelian origins, which they identified as the core connecting the dimensional fault to regular space. Hijikata planned to release wave-motion energy into the space surrounding them, causing thermal reactions around the battleship which they could draw into the engine to warp away without starting it. At the same time, Desler prepared his flagship's Desler cannon to shoot both Yamato and the two remaining Lascauxs inside of the tube, inadvertently playing into their plans. The shockwave resulting from the thermal reactions of Desler's weapon worked exactly as the Admiral had planned, and Yamato successfully exited the fault as the tube-like structure collapsed. With it destroyed, the fault itself dissipated.[2]

Aftermath[]

Immediately after the fault's disappearance, a large fleet of Desler supporters headed by Lieutenant General Ghader Talan warped out and met up with their Supreme Leader.[2] To prevent Mil from informing Zworder about Desler's defection now that the fault wasn't blocking his Cosmo Wave, pieces of the destroyed Archelian structure were retrieved and put inside of a cell holding the Gatlantean, generating the same effect.[8]

This battle was the first time Hijikata took command since he boarded Yamato. He claimed that he only did so to aid Kodai, whom he believed was perfectly capable of serving as the battleship's captain. However, this effectively served as the first step for him to break through his reluctance and eventually become Yamato's commanding officer under Kodai's request.[2][9]

Later, the battleship's technical officer analyzed the data taken from the fault's collapse, and realized the weapon that had fired at them was indeed a Desler cannon.[2]
