Space Battleship Yamato Wiki

The Battle against Neu Deusura[5] was an attempt by Supreme Leader Abelt Dessler to sink the Earthling battleship Yamato near the end of the Gatlantis Campaign. It was incited by Gatlantis, as Desler had been promised by the Gatlantean spokesperson Mil that if he destroyed the battleship, Gatlantis would grant the Garmillas species a new homeworld in place of the dying Garmillas.

Dessler Fleet Terezart

The Desler fleet at Terezart

In early 2203, after being joined by a large fleet of supporters headed by Lt. General Ghader Talan, the fallen Supreme Leader Abelt Desler asserted his independence from the Gatlantis Empire and attempted to seize control of planet Terezart to use it as a bargaining chip with the Gatlantean emperor Zworder. He was surprisingly joined by his lost nephew, Ranhardt Desler, who had been traveling aboard the Earthling battleship Yamato under the alias Klaus Keyman. However, Ranhardt turned out to be a spy for the new Garmillan government, who only stayed with his uncle long enough to discover the location and identity of the head of the Desler-aligned political criminals on Garmillas.[6][7] After being betrayed by Ranhardt, Desler lost control of Terezart and was forced back into servitude to the Gatlantis Empire. The Gatlantean spokesperson Mil assured the Supreme Leader that if he destroyed the Yamato, Emperor Zworder would gift him a new planet for the Garmillas race in place of their dying homeworld of Garmillas.[8][2]

During the Decisive Battle off Mars, Yamato had recieved serious damage and a number of its crew members had been injured. Among them was Lieutenant Yuki Mori, Operations Officer and fiancée to Tactics Officer Susumu Kodai, who was now suffering from an amnesia and had forgotten every event from the past four years.[9][10] The battleship underwent a series of massive repairs at the Temporary Docks off Mars. On May 31,[11] it finally left the red planet's orbit to reach the Earth and lead one last assault at the invading Gatlantis Empire's mobile capital. Revewing the confession of a redeemed Gatlantean spy, Admiral Ryu Hijikata, the ship's commanding officer, grew suspicious of another infiltrator still roaming free among Yamato's crew. Since the 7th Space Cavalry Regiment had been picked up by the battleship after a battle on the 11th planet, they were the main suspects and the group was suspended from active duty.[2]

The Battle[]

Initial encounter and boarding[]

YAMATO neu Deusura

Yamato warps out in front of '' Neu Deusura ''

On June 1,[1] Desler hid his flagship, Neu Deusura, in the mist left behind by the passage of the White Comet, Gatlantis' mobile capital, and prepared to ambush Yamato. The Supreme Leader prepared to fire his flagship's Desler cannon to wipe out his opponent from afar, but the flash of the weapon's charging was spotted by Lt. Keyman from Yamato's bridge. Hijikata ordered the battleship to short-warp (2199) ahead to eliminate any doubts.[2]

Needle Slave trap

Yamato came face-to-face with Neu Deusura and proceeded to ram the enemy vessel. Desler responded by ejecting his vessel's coreship, where most of the personnel was stationed. As an army of Needleslaves was deployed from Neu Deusura, Hijikata ordered the 7th Regiment to be deployed despite their previous suspension. Alpha team, led by regimental commander Saito, equipped their Type 2 Space Mobile Armors in hand-to-hand ccombat mode and took on the defense of the battleship; Bravo team, led by Lieutenant Kodai, stormed the enemy flagship; Keyman, who had been aboard Neu Deusura and knew his way around the ship, was charged with handling the timing of the attack. As Kodai's team infiltrated Neu Deusura, the Needle Slaves broke through Yamato's Wave-motion Shield and began pouring inside the battleship. The space cavalrymen set up a laser trap inside Yamato's corridors and led the enemy automatons toward it, slicing them apart. Saito then began fighting hand-to-hand with the invading Needle Slaves, but his mobile armor was damaged in the right leg and fell over. Distracted by her superior being in danger, Sergeant Major Nagakura was overwhelmed by the enemy, and her mobile armor was pinned to a wall. Saito ran out of his suit to protect her, but after scanning him and recognizing him, the invading automatons retreated. The still-immobile Nagakura shot at the corridor's ceiling to seal off the enemy entry point. This made Saito realize that he had been turned into a living dead body by Gatlantis and had been the one unwillingly relaying the information all along.[2]

Confrontation[]

Keyman breached Neu Deusura's control room and remotely deactivated all the Gami-loids that were crewing the ship. General Talan hailed Desler's bridge and offered to send a rescue team to the flagship, but the Supreme Leader refused. At that point, Keyman stormed the bridge and confronted his uncle, but the older Desler was shot in his side by Mil. Wanting to see for himself the unreasonable human love so opposed by Gatlantis, the Gatlantean officer gave Keyman a choice: if he killed his uncle then and there, Gatlantis would immediately cease the attack on both Garmillas and the Earth for another 10,000 years.[2]

Kodai mil gunpoint

Desler asked his nephew to shoot, knowing  Mil would not lie about his offer. Before Keyman could shoot, he was interrupted by Kodai, who had already been challenged by Gatlantis with a similar dilemma and stated that the only correct answer was not to choose. Angered by the Earthling's impudence, Mil raised his gun against him, but Kodai rapidly dodged his shot and aimed at the Needle Slaves' control panel standing right behind him, destroying it and deactivating all enemy automatons. He then sneaked behind the Gatlantean and held him at gunpoint. Mil taunted him, saying that ultimately, despite all of his efforts against violence, like all humans, he was still going to pull the trigger and kill someone. In response, Kodai lowered his weapon and stated that he was trying to sue for peace and was ready to surrender himself to Gatlantis to achieve that end.[3]

Whoops 2202

Mil is shot down

Mercilessly, Mil shot the tactics officer, but the bullet was instead taken by Lieutenant Mori, who had just rushed to the scene. The injury she received was not fatal, but it made her fall unconscious. This event deeply shook Mil: a woman who had forgotten everything about the man she loved and had just sacrificed herself to save him despite having no memory of him. It threatened the entire understanding Gatlantean philosophy had on emotions and the bonds linking people together making Mil understand that the Gatlanteans themselves still had some humanity left and had to work with humans to understand it. While he relayed his thoughts to Emperor Zworder via Cosmo Wave, Mil lowered his gun and approached Kodai with a peace offering. But right at that moment, the Gatlantean was gunned down by the rescue team sent by Talan, killing him instantly and sending a telepathic shockwave to all those linked to him via Cosmo Wave, including Zworder.[3]

Aftermath[]

With Mil's death, the last possible chance of peace between Gatlantis and humanity was lost. The thoughts of the young Gatlantean would influence Zworder greatly and, while his outlook on humanity did not change, these newfound ideas would come to shape the Great Emperor's action during the coming battle.[3][12] These events also profoundly shook Supreme Leader Desler. Instead of running back to Gatlantis to cling to whatever chance he had to regain his lost throne on Garmillas, he chose to ally himself with Yamato and end the Garmillas civil war by making peace with the current Garmillan government, in hopes of being able to work with them to find a new home world suited for Garmillan emigration.[3][4]

Mil's body was later presented to Toko Katsuragi, a clone who had inherited the memories of the Zemurian woman who had raised the first Mil clone as a son thousands of years before.[9][3]

Having discovered that he had been manipulated by Gatlantis all along, Saito chose to subject himself to a radiation shower that drastically decreased his lifespan, leaving him with just enough time to face off against the empire in another battle, but managed to cut him free from the enemy's control.[3]

One day later,[1] Gatlantis reached the orbit of the Earth, devastated the last remaining forces that were defending the planet, and launched a massive air strike on the Earth Federation's capital, declaring supremacy over the entire planet.[3]
