The Balun Military Base[2] was a Greater Garmillan Empire base located on the rogue Planet Balun between the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Milky Way Galaxy. Directly under the control of Imperial High Command, the Balun base was the seat of the Galactic theater commander of operations during the Great Garmillas War, as well as a pivotal beacon for Garmillas spacecraft movement due to Balun's position at a hub for the archelian subspace gate network. It was built over a preexisting structure built by the Archelias civilization eons before the present.
Overview[]
The Balun Military Base was composed of two rocky platforms floating separately in the cloudy atmosphere of Balun, linked by a series of cables. The upper section housed a spacedock and, on its underside, a rocky spire where the base's central command room was located.

The lower platform had a hole at its center, in the middle of which stood another floating spire housing an artificial structure similar to the subspace gates control unit. The base's lower section was filled with ancient archelian technology and ruins, including a room housing a Ghost Link device.
The structure was surrounded by an energy field, allowing humans to breathe in the open without using pressurized suits. The entire base, as well as the subspace gates surrounding, it were powered by the artificial core of Planet Balun.[1][2][3][4][5]
History[]
The structure that would become the Balun Military Base was initially built as a hub for the subspace gate network by the Archelias civilization long before the emergence of the modern human species.[4]

Goer's fleet launches to pursue Yamato
Together with the rest of the network, it was picked up in more recent times by the Greater Garmillan Empire, which turned it into a military base directly under the control of Imperial High Command. The Balun Military Base played a pivotal role for the Imperial Garmillas Defense Force, controlling the rear of all regional fleets and serving as the headquarters of the Galactic Area Army and he Galactic Theater, the main theater of the Great Garmillas War. It also provided military support to the Garmillan provinces in the Milky Way's district.[6] As commander of galactic theater operations, Major General Gremdt Goer also served as commander of the base where he had stationed his fleet. In March of 2199, he and his fleet launched from the Balun to hunt down the Earthling battleship Yamato.[1]

Zoellik assembled a massive fleet at Balun
Due to his failure at stopping the earth vessel, Goer was removed from the position of Galactic theater commander, which was given to Colonel General Elk Domel. The General was however convicted of plotting to assassinate the Eternal Supreme Leader of the Greater Garmillan Empire, Abelt Desler, and was imprisoned and sentenced to death. In reality, the crime had been orchestrated by Imperial Marshall Herm Zoellik, who intended to raise up an army and take control of the empire. To do so, he planned a naval review at Balun. On May 14, 10,000 ships assembled at the base to hear Zoellik's address but the Marshall's treachery was revealed, and he was executed by Goer.[3][5][7]

The base's lower section is engulfed by flames
As the naval review unfolded, Yamato emerged from a subspace gate and led a surprise attack against the base. Using its Wave-motion Gun, the battleship destroyed Planet Balun's energy core, causing a planetary collapse and destroying both the Naval base and the gate linking Balun with the Large Magellanic Cloud, stranding the remaining fleet months worth of travel away from the empire's homeworld.[5]
