The Hyuga, namesake of the Hyuga-class
The Aerospaceplane Carrier is a warship designation used by the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy. The term originated prior to the Garmillas War, during the era of the Inner Planetary Wars, when aerospaceplane—small vehicles capable of operating both within planetary atmospheres and in outer space—underwent rapid development.[1]
Although the term "aerospaceplane" had largely fallen out of use by the early 23rd century, having been replaced by the more general term "spaceplane," the designation was revived in 2207 when the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy began commissioning dedicated carrier vessels. The Cosmo Force, the Cosmo Navy’s parent branch which had evolved from the United Nations Air Force, formally requested the use of the term "Aerospaceplane Carrier" to reflect its origins in atmospheric aviation.[1]
The Hyuga-class Battleship-carrier is also designated as an Aerospace Carrier.[1]
