The 65th Escort Corps,[5] alternatively Escort Division 65,[6] also colloquially called the Yamato fleet, was a fleet of the Earth Federation under the command of Captain Osamu Yamanami. In October 2205, the fleet went on a diplomatic trip towards the Salezar System acting as an escort for the Peace Corps and subsequently got entangled in the Iscandar Incident. The fleet was dissolved as part of the organizational changes for the 2206 fiscal year.

History[]

Founding and departure[]

38th class

The 38th graduation took place aboard Yamato

The 65th Escort Corps was formed by the Earth Federation and would make its first trip to the Salezar System escorting the Peace Corps and while conducting training for cadets from the 38th Class of the National Space Defense Academy in October 2205. On October 1, 2205, After Yamato joined with the fleet and after the 65th Escort Corps welcomed its new members and the Peace Corps, the delegation they were supposed to escort to the Salezar system.[7][1]

The next day, the fleet prepared to take off. Commander Susumu Kodai discovers that one of the new crew members, W.O. Ryusuke Domon, has changed his background record and joined Yamato because of a personal grudge with him. To test his resolve, Kodai gives Domon the helm of the Yamato for takeoff. Initially, the Warrant Officer tried to crash the ship to get revenge on Kodai, but ultimately decided against it, he was later arrested by the ship's security department, but was given the opportunity to continue staying on the ship as quartermaster.[1]

Before continuing their journey, the fleet met with Ginga who sends Technician Sukeji Yabu to Yamato who is carrying a prototype engine for a dimensional submarine that is being assembled in Asuka. The fleet conducted training of the Yamato and Hyuga Air Corps, the Asuka Space Cavalry, and combat training in orbit of the 11th planet during the journey.[1] When the 65th Escort Corps received news of the destruction of Garmillas at the hands of an unknown enemy, all ships were told to stop their journey for fear that they might drag Earth into war with Bolar Federation. Despite Kodai's appeal to Peace Corps representatives, central command was unable to agree to a rescue mission to help the surviving Garmillans. However, the younger crewmembers aboard Yamato rebelled and personally expelled the delegation members from the battleship with Kodai's approval, now the ship's captain.[8][2]

Iscandar Incident[]

Save Iscandar! Rebellion of the Young Heroes!!

The 65th Escort Corps arrive on Iscandar

Yamato, carrying out his plan, is followed by Hyuga and Asuka, and arrives just in time to face the enemy, now identified as the mysterious Dezariam, at the Rescue of Iscandar.[2][9] Dezariam used unknown technology to move the planet Iscandar to their home world, but to do so, they needed to gather large amounts of energy by destroying the nearby planet Garmario. In agreement with Desler's fleet, Yamato plans to use a wave motion gun to destroy Garmario before Dezariam can use it for their purposes. However, by firing his weapon, Yamato loses energy completely, and remains defenseless as the shockwave and debris left over from Garmario's destruction threaten to drown him. The ship is saved by Asuka, who uses a Wave-motion Resonance Waveguide Device to supply enough energy to restart its engines.[9]

Hyuga Yamato

The 65th Escort Corps took part in another operation to rescue civilians still trapped on Iscandar, after Dezariam attempts to fire a superweapon at the planet, threatening everyone on its surface, Yamato, Hyuga and Desler's new flagship to protect Iscandar's capital with its wave motion shield.[10] The 65th Escort Corps partook in the final battle against Dezariam, which ultimately destroyed the invading force, but resulted in the destruction of the planet Iscandar and the deaths of Queen Stasha Iscandar and Third Princess Yurisha Iscandar. With the end of the brief but devastating conflict, the 65th Escort Corps set course back to the Earth.[11]

Dissolution and reunion[]

Immediately after its return to the Earth, the 65th Escort Corps was dissolved. Deeming them responsible for the fleet's rebellion during the Iscandar Incident, all commanders including Kodai were dismissed and the crews of Asuka, Hyuga and Yamato were reassigned to other posts.[12] The personnel changes were officially carried out as part of the organizational changes for the 2206 fiscal year, but many saw it as a response to the arbitrary action carried out during the Iscandar Incident by the 65th Escort Corps' crews.[4] In reality, these provisions were part of General Commander-in-Chief Todo's secret plan to prepare for a plausible Ground Invasion of Earth, Operation DAD.[13]

The Yamato was awarded with a medal by the Earth government for being the first Earthling vessel to ever face off against three alien opponents, achieve significant results, and return home safely, before being transferred to the reserve fleet; the Hyuga was assigned to the 28th Escort Corps and became the home of most of the fleet's air squadron; and the Asuka was put under the command of Seiya Kitano, one of the minds behind Operation DAD.[4][13][14]

In October 2207, Dezariam invaded planet Earth as anticipated. A secret order was relayed to all former crew members of the 65th to gather at the Yamato.[13]
