This article is about the 11th planet of the solar system as seen in Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love. For its counterpart in Space Battleship Yamato 2 and its sequels, see Planet 11.

The 11th planet (also spelled eleventh planet[3]) of the solar system is a terrestrial world located in the outer solar system which is not orbited by any natural satellites.

During the Garmillas War, the 11th planet served as a supply base for the Garmillan Pluto Frontline Base and, after the founding of the Earth Federation in the early 23rd century, the world became a joint colony of the E.F. and the Greater Garmillan Empire, thanks to an artificial sun that allowed it to sustain life. The 11th planet was abbandoned by its settlers in late 2202 following the Battle of the eleventh planet.

Overview[]

The 11th planet, unlike Pluto, is a world that is mostly dominated by a large icy glacier in the southern hemisphere with a single liquid water river passing through a canyon that seemingly spans the entire length of the planet and can easily be spotted from orbit. Natural weather formations such as clouds are present; though it is unknown if this was already present before or after it was terraformed. The world was terraformed by the Greater Garmillan Empire during the Garmillas War and, due to its eliptical orbit and the vast distance from the Sun, it was given an artificial sun to sustain life.[1]

History[]

Garmillas War and beyond[]

During the Garmillas War, the 11th planet was used as a resupply base by Garmillas to help reinforce their frontline base on Pluto. Even as the war was still ongoing, at least one civilian colonist was born on the planet.[4] After Operation M2, the base on the 11th planet was abandoned by Colonel Schulz and the Teron Attack Force who pursued the Earthling battleship Yamato as it left the system. The 11th planet was avoided altogether on the Yamato's route towards and back from Iscandar.[5][6]

The joint colony[]

After the conflict, the planet came under the control of the Earth Federation,[2] but since Garmillas colonists were already present, it became a joint colony between the empire and the Earth, with civilians from both races coexisting in a city located on the southern coastline of the planets' supercontinent close to the planetwide canyon. By December 2202, the 11th planet became the headquarters of the Outer Defense Division of the United Nations Cosmo Force, led by Admiral Ryu Hijikata, and peace was maintained by the 7th Regiment of the Space Cavalry under the command of Second Lieutenant Hajime Saito. The citizens of the shared colony lived in peace and the Garmillans even adopted Earth customs for themselves such as Christmas while staying.[1] By December 24, 2202,[7] the Garmillas crew that terraformed the 11th planet was about to leave after completing its work. Saito took the occasion to organize a farewell party for the group, which was also going to be a Christmas party open to the civilians.[3]

However, on Christmas Eve,[7] a Gatlantis Empire fleet attacked the 11th planet. After the initial assault, only 200 colonists and some members of the 7th Regiment survived. Sargeant Major Shiori Nagakura was sent out in a rocket to bring back help since traditional communications were down. Receiving aid from the Yamato, the surviving colonists were successfully evacuated aboard the battleship, which had to use its Wave-motion Gun on the 11th planet's artificial sun to prevent the Gatlantean forces from using the star as the core of a superweapon that was targeted at the Earth. With the artificial sun's destruction, the invading fleet was rendered unable to operate, but the planet became unable to support life.[5][8]

Beyond the Gatlantis War[]

As of 2205, the planet has not been resettled, with the surviving colonists having moved to Earth instead.[9][10] The battleship Alpheratz is currently tasked with supervising the wrecks left behind by the Gatlantean invaders, monitoring a possible reactivation.[11]

In the novels[]

The Space Battleship Yamato 2202 novelization gives additional setting information on the 11th Planet. In the novels, the Earth had known of Planet 10's existance for some time, but the existence of the eleventh planet was only revealed when the peace treaty with Garmillas was signed after the war. At that time, the Earth pretended to have known about it from the beginning and claimed territorial rights, and after some quarrel over the treatment of the Garmillas settlers, it was decided that the colony would be treated as a special zone jointly developed by Earth and Garmillas. The planet was also given a Garmillan name by the first colonists, but to not give any validity to Garmillas' territorial claims, the Earth Federation refuses to use it, and an official Earthling name is yet to be given. Additionally, it's explained that the planet wasn't use as a replacement base after the fall of the Pluto base was because of a problem with the its artificial sun.[12]

Notes[]

  • In Japanese, the name is only ever written in chinese numericals (第十一番惑星). The english translations seen on screen have the number "eleven" both spelled out and written as "11".[1]
  • The english dub for Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love also translates the planet's name as "Planet 11".
